I did change the height of the strainer. But not to the extend shown in the picture. See attached photo to see the level in the strainer with the boat at rest. You can ask Bill Rouse for a document I made about the replacement of the primary manifold. I managed to cross the ocean with the elevated position of the new strainer. So I’m pretty sure it works fine.
At least I can clean the primary suction tube from inside the engine compartment.

Many thanks Arno, Nick, Bill and Bill!

I will fix the strainer in the same position as  Arno did.

Arno,

I think you correctly adjusted for the load on your A54.

Martin,

Do not change the height of the strainer.   The Vetus instructions assume the only “customer” is an engine with a standard, positive displacement, raw water pump.  The Amel system is much more complex than that.  As Nick has pointed out, if you mount the strainer as Vetus suggested, the AC pumps, among others, will not work.

Hi Martin,

It is not just the engine that runs through the water strainer. I believe that while the engine’s raw water pump would have no problem pulling the water nor the generator, the desalinator low pressure pump and aircon cooling pumps are not self priming. They would lose the prime and not work.

I suggest you instal the new exactly as Amel did originally.

Kind regards

Nick

Dear Ameliens

I just have received the primary manifold together with a new Vetus water strainer. When I looked at the manual of the water strainer I noticed that the strainer allways should be installed above the water line see attached pic. In fact, the existing strainer of our 54 is installed half inch below the waterline. If you take off the top cap with the valve open, seawater runs in.
Is there any explanation why Amel has installed the strainer differently from the Vetus specifications?
