Servicing the mail furler Bonfiglio gearbox - questions.... #solution

Many thanks!

This has been really helpful. I will now order another bearing and use light, waterproof grease in the gearbox.
And, Ian, a very good advise. Mine has not been serviced in the fifteen years I have had the boat, so it is probably due time.
I think that I, as well as many boaters, tend to forget about maintenance as long as things works fine. And they really have done.

Only fault has been with my genoa furler where the electric motor was malfunctioning due to water ingress a couple of years ago. After emptying and drying it has worked fine ever since.

Best,
Lars

Lars,

Yes, there should be a bearing
When these gearboxes were new they were filled with very heavy oil. I have always used waterproof grease.

Lars,
When I first tried to service mine the shaft was well and truly stuck. Amel in Martinique took he boom off to their workshop and used a hydraulic press to remove it. I’ve removed it every two years with a slight tap of a heavy hammer.
There has been discussion about using oil, but I’ve kept with a light grease, but also drilled and tapped two holes to keep the grease renewed. The gearboxes don’t get a lot of use compared to other places where they are in continual use. I think they are more prone to neglect, so they go on my bi annual removal check and replace along with bow thruster and C Drive.

Hi Bill

Many thanks for the document - absolutely valuable information.
But I am still in doubth about the "missing" bearing in my gearbox. The one at the motor-end of the input axel where I have just the lipseal but no bearing (marked as no. 35 on the drawing). Shoud there be a bearing there...?
Also about the lubriacion - is it correct to fill the gearbox with grease (and not '320' type oil)? And what grease should I use?

Best,
Lars

Lars,

The bearings are pressed on normally with a hydraulic press.

Here is some information for you:

Help needed!

When servicing the Bonfiglio gearbox I succeeded in taking it almost fully apart.
Now I am trying to figure out if the driveshaft for the furler can be pressed out (or hammered out) of the gearbox endplate? Or is there a more gentle solution?

Also I am wondering if a bearing is missing from the worm driveshaft: It is there on Bonfiglio drawings but in my gearbox there is just the lipseal an no bearing. Am  I missing a bearing?

And finally, what type of lubrication should be used in the gearbox? Bonafiglio says a specific "320" type oil, but in my gearbox there was grease...
If grease is correct, then what type?

Really looking forward to your help, as I am in Rome, Italy, and everything is really hard to communicate here when not speaking Italian...

Best,
