Bill,
Thank you. That’s something else I didn’t know and will change on my main halyard -timely as it needs renewing!

I believe you should consider the following before finalizing the length of the halyard you order and the end splicing. I agree with Bill Kinney. A bowline knot is appropriate at the "sail-end" of the halyard. I also believe that a bowline knot is appropriate at the "securing-end" of the halyard.

I urge you to consider the fact that the "sail-end" of the halyard is a victim of UV damage and wear and stress damage. This end of the sail on Maramus, Santorini, SMs, & 54s is exposed to UV at the mast top and rides on one or more sheaves where it changes direction by 180 degrees. This small portion of the halyard will be stressed more than any other area. This area should be inspected every time you drop the sail, every 3-4 years, and before any ocean crossing. If damage is seen, a small damaged portion of that end of the halyard should be removed. THIS IS WHERE YOU CONSIDER THE OVERALL LENGTH.

Fortunately, Henri Amel knew this and the original lengths of your halyards took this into account. You could trim the "sail-end" of the halyards, having enough surplus on the "securing-end" to do this numerous times.

One other comment. Carefully tie the bowline properly at the "sail-end" and whip the tail to ensure no fouling.

I know this will help a few owners get their Halyards back to what they should be.

The photos below document what they should be, with the exception of the first photo. The first photo shows you what not to do.

I am attaching photo of Genoa swivel with blue halyard. Is the some thing for main sail? So I do not need to order any eye splice on the sail side. Just use the knot on this side and that is it? Will this change the length that I will order? As per specification the halyard length is 17,2 m.
Thank you.

Bill, thank you. So if I understand it,  the sail (swivel) side can bi a small eye and then schukle that connects to swivel? The same as it is for genoa. The other side of main halyard is without the cover. It is strange and I could not figure out why this was done by previous owner.

Slavcko,

On our boat the sail end of the halyard is tied to the swivel.  We find that convenient because it allows easy adjustment of length.  If you chose to use a splice loop here, it could be quite small, the attachment to the swivel is through a shackle. An overly long loop would risk putting the bury of the splice up over the sleeve and that would not be good for it.

For the other end of the halyard, it is  fitting over the metal tab on the adjustment car (photo below). The dimensions of the loop are not important, anything larger than about 4 cm would work. I am not sure what you mean “without cover” for this end of the halyard.  There would be no reason I can think of to strip off the cover from the end of the halyard.  The cover is there to protect the core from the sun, and this is the only part of the halyard that is routinely exposed to sun.

I am in process of ordering new mainsail halyard and I am not sure what kind of eye splice is on the side where sail is connected. Is it eye splice with cover or schacle? I am not on the boat so info is appreciated, Info about the size of the eye on the other side would be great as well. I know that current halyard eye is without cover on this side.
