Sail choices
Malcolm Matalka
Hello!
I need to buy new sails for my Sharki. I am thinking of going to North Sails in Le Marin, Martinique. Other suggestions accepted! For the Sharki, any special considerations I should take in looking? Particular material or sizing? Apologies if my questions are a bit scattered. I'm trying to figure out a lot all at once! Thank you, /Malcolm Sharki #89 |

With software, any sail loft can do a good job. They just have to stitch with a UV resistant thread. Not all lofts do that. For example the loft in Port Napoleon did not do that and we had to get the lazy jack bags restitched, a pain in the neck.
In my experience, sometimes the North and Hood lofts can be a hit and miss. Sometimes they do not respect their delivery time. Or your budget is too small. I have had good experience with https://www.precisionsailloft.com/ They are from Canada and shipped a mainsail on time -- John Bernard "JB" Duler San Francisco Meltem # 19, Western Med |

Hi, I own Sharki 127 with roller furling main and mizzen. Mack Sails in Florida made a new main, mizzen, mizzen stay sail, and three jibs for my boat. I liked the 130% jib so much that after a circumnavigation I had the identical sail made again.

Hi Malcom In Marin, in addition to North Sail, there is also the Voilerie Incidence which seems to work well. It is located in the Artimer area and you can go by boat up a small river a few hundred meters W of the shipyard area (Carenantilles). O suggest you to obtain the free booklet 'T Ponton where you will find everything relating to boating in the French Antilles, with the addresses and data, an overview of the various marinas and a reasoned index of all the activities divided by sector. You can find it at the shipchandlers. In regards to points to check regarding the Sharki there may be holes under the mizzen mast which tend to rot on the bottom and dampen the aft cabin bulkhead. Another point to check is the pipe that carries the chain from the windlass to its locker. The tube is made of steel and is rusting and needs to be replaced. Above all you have to carefully check the forestay chainstay which broke on several Sharkis due to a design error. It happened to me and it's not a pleasant experience. I have photos of the modification I made. In the blog you will find these topics covered in depth with possible solutions.
