A54 staysail tang leak

Scott SV Tengah

We have water intrusion at the base of the staysail tang on our A54 #69. See red circled area on attached photo. Water drips down into the bow thruster locker and while it drains out fine, I'd rather not have water dripping onto our expensive bowthruster as Ive already replaced it once!

Does anyone else have this issue and more importantly, has anyone solved this?

In 2019, we discovered the leak and Alban of Amel Martinique informed me that Amel changed the design of the staysail lower attachment. My hull number had the vertical tang welded to the base plate, which caused the base plate to lift off the deck with the flexing that comes with sailing. This caused a leak.

Alban's fix was to mirror what was done on later A54. This involved separating the tang from the deck plate solved the problem of the deckplate lifting but of course now the tang/deck connection itself leaks!

We plan to remove it and reseal it again with Sikaflex, but hoping for a more permanent solution. Thoughts appreciated!

Hi Scott,

Have you tried butyl tape before? It is often used for this type of applications or for deck trough bolted stanchions and etc.
with butyl tape you can lift up the plate, put it on plate to seal it to the deck and around tang. It is flexible and has very long working life span.

You will need to keep tightening bolts for few days though, while squeezing out excess.

Bill Kinney posted a while back a solution he found
The chainplate for the Super Maramu forestay goes through the deck, through the bow locker, and then through out the hull where it is bolted to the stem plate.  In the original configuration, the penetrations through the deck and the hull were calked to prevent water entry to the bow locker.

In the modification that Amel Caribe did for us, they created a tunnel from the deck penetration to the hull penetration. Now there is no reason to caulk them anymore, and water that enters the top, just flows out the hull penetration.  No place for it to be trapped.

Does that make sense?  If not I can draw a picture which will surely be clearer than my words…

I sort of replicated what he described and now have dry lockers.

Hi Scott,

Hope you’re doing well. On our A54 Nr. 55 the base of the staysail looks different and is welded with a plate (see photo).

No water ingress so far (cross fingers). I don’t know why AMEL changed this on later models?

Hi Scott,

My A54#56 is also the same as Ruedi in A54#55 and welded I’d send a picture but it’s the same.
Your unit is A54#69 why the change I have no idea.

I can confirm #113 is also a welded fitting and bolted down like Randall and Reudi. Although I am in the process of t try ing to get my bow locker more water resistant.

What is incredibly frustrating is that #69 had the tang welded to the base plate originally and I spent quite a bit of money altering it as it was proposed to me as a solution to a minor leak. The problem is now much worse and it's literally like a mini waterfall into my bow locker when it rains.

I just found out that this leak has killed my bowthruster lift motor but thankfully has not affected the bowthruster itself.

I would love to use butyl tape but I am not sure how that would work with the existing configuration where the tang is separated from the base plate?

Reudi - unrelated question: I see that you have a bit of a "guard" over the front of your staysail deck attachment. Could you show a better picture of that? I am guessing it was placed there to help prevent the problem of your lazy genoa sheet getting caught there?

Hi Scott,

Here weg go. The guard is welded on the Furler-Cover on the top only. It comes off with the front part of the cover.

Cheers

Hi Scott, butyl tape will adhere to tang and fill surrounding hole and adhere to fiberglass and plate metal. It’s flexible so it should not be affected by tang movement. If it does not work, you can always easily remove it with diesel.
The way Alban did, is how a lot of boats setup. Take a look at this picture from Valiant 40 for example. Chain plate penetrates hull and then there is deck cover.

Thanks Ruslan and Reudi.

Ruslan - I'll try butyl tape. I may need to build a "tunnel" to direct water from the opening past the bowthruster components down to the drainage area. If I could do it again, I would have left the tang/plate welded together and simply used butyl tape on the plate. Lesson learned.

Gents,
Been following this thread of staysail tang and bow lazarette water ingress. Anyone have success with the butyl tape?  Scott?
