Advice // RE: Volvo Penta TDM22 Engine Mounts

Flávio Ubatuba

Hi everyone,

We are currently in the process of engaging a mechanic to do a major service our Volvo Penta TDM22 on our SM and we need to replace the engine mounts.

Currently our engine mounts are secured to a bracket with some kind of disc below the bracket. See attached photos. We are wanting to replace the engine mounts, brackets and disc pieces as they are rusted.

It looks like we have the Vetus K50 engine mounts. Should we replace with the K50 or the Vetus Mitsteun engine mounts?  I saw a previous thread and it seems the Vetus Mitsteun is recommended for this engine.

Does anyone have experience with the removal and installation of the engine mounts and can provide us information on what to expect when they are removed and replaced?

Any information is much appreciated so we have an better understanding of what to expect.

Thank you,

Kind Regards,

On the Volvo engines the Mitsteun mounts were used under the engine frame. It looks like that's exactly what you have, they are the only round Vetus mounts. The K50 was used between the C-drive and the engine frame.

The process can be pretty straightforward, we did it without actually lifting the engine out of the boat, but just sliding it back and forth and lifting the front, and then the back, of the frame.

The main engine mounts are bolted to steel plates buried in the stringers.

The only non-obvious part of the process is how to realign the engine and c-drive.  Be sure the mechanic follows the EXACT procedure recommended by Amel, including using the special spacer.  It is a completely different procedure than aligning a standard prop shaft. Not harder, just different. Mechanics who do not understand this, make a hash of it.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.

Ken also contacted me to provide some info which was great as he has just changed his engine mounts.

I don’t know if we have the special spacer. Do you have a photo of the spacer?

Thank you,

The spacer was designed by Amel to use if the owner no longer wanted the Pulley for the Shaft Alternator. If this is what you want, just have a machine shop cut down the pulley and that is your spacer.
