Bilge copper grounding strip
Paul Dowd and Sharon Brown
Hi all,
Has anyone every managed to find a suitable replacement in Grenada for the copper grounding strip in the bilge? So far I have found neither the right gauge strip nor copper pipe. I can find rolls of very thin copper strip, but that would mean bundling quite as few of then together so make the recommended 1/8”, which does not seem to me like an acceptable solution.
Cheers, Paul

A perfectly fine grounding strap can be made from copper plumbing tubing. Hammer the ends flat to make connection terminals. Nothing magic about the kind of copper or the shape. Almost any size tubing will have way more copper than the Amel original thin copper strap. Size it based on the width after flattening, be sure that’s wide enough to include a hole big enough to fit the keel bolt. There are a couple hardware stores on Grenada that will carry it. Have you tried Ramdhanny’s TrueValue?

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the info. Bill Rouse recommends 2” pipe but I’m not finding that gauge here so far (will be looking more today). If I can only get a smaller diameter then I may have to splay the end of the pipe, as opposed to just flattening it, in order the get the width required for the 22mm hole I need to drill through it. In this case I hope it will be thick enough. As you say, the original strap does seem rather thin.
Cheers, Paul
