Bow Thruster oil leak

Peter Jaeger

Hi Amelians
I sailed a week ago in the Baltic Sea from Kiel via Denmark to Neustadt. (Was quite cold and dark). At the very end of the trip in the harbor I saw in the bow area a fairly large oil pool, which probably comes from the bow thruster, 0.3 liters is also about the size of the pool.
Now I have two questions:
1. is it a problem if the gearbox is without or with little oil a month in the water (bow thruster is in position above), Corosion?f
2. which spare parts (seals, bearings, ..) do I have to order from Amel for the repair/service? Last service was done in autumn 2019 by Amel in La Rochelle.
Thanks for any advice
Peter

Hello,

The problem is the oil seal around the propeller schaft.( White shaft inside the propeller. You can order it with Maid at Amel. or in the industry...
Easy job

Kind regards

Phil

The answer to your question is going to depend on whether you have this version of the bow thruster with a removable round disk because with hull number 003, I think it may be possible that you have the early model Buffalo Bow Thruster. The difference is that the Buffalo does not have the removable cap I circled in green.

Thank you Bill and Phil
I think I have the same type Bow Thruster like you show on the picture. I am sure a have the screw holes for the removable plastic cap.

Peter, if you have the removable round disk, you probably want 2 rebuild kits from SAV @Amel.fr, one is the Normal Service Kit, and the other is the Gear Kit. I assume the gears may need replacing because of the sudden loss of all of the oil. You can confirm my guess by opening the round disk. You might see this:

It is possible that all you need is the normal Bow Thruster service kit (the first photo below). However, Amel is beginning to stock fewer parts and it is probably prudent to buy both. See snippets from my Amel Book, below.

Hi
Finaly I serviced the bow thruster, obviously the problem was caused by the prop shaft seal. In this context I also changed all parts of the gear set from AMEL. Thanks for all good advices. Thank you all.
Best
