Bowthruster Trunk Coating Mystery

Tilo & Jeannette Peters

I’ve got a question for those of you with Super Maramus: have any of you noticed if the inside of the bowthruster trunk is coated with gelcoat or any other form of barrier coat?

We are still trying to figure out what caused our hull to have such a bad case of osmosis. I’ve stripped the gelcoat off the hull and I also dropped the bowthruster to service it. After removing the bowthruster I hit it with a pressure washer bud did not sand or scrape it. I was somewhat amazed to find that the inside of the trunk only had antifouling on it, but no other form of barrier coat or gelcoat.

We have found out that the boat was in La Rochelle in 1999 when cyclone Martin hit and it did suffer some hull damage. So we’re wondering if the repair yard sandblasted the whole hull and nobody bothered to recoat the bowthruster trunk. This would help us determine the cause of the osmosis.

I’m attaching several photos to provide you a basis of comparison.

Cheers,

Tilo

I am going to haul out next week, it doesn't look original from memory.

Tilo,
We are hauled out too for complete bottom job. Please find enclosed some photos of our bowtruster trunk.
As far as I can see there is no gelcoat or other barrier except primers and antifouling layers.
Give me a call to discuss your findings.
