Broken water level dipstick

Eamonn Washington

Hi

I bent the water level dipstick with 900 liters in the tank, so near the bottom of the dipstick.  (I was running the watermaker, stumbled going down the companionway and grabbed anything.)  It is 90% broken through.

I tried self amalgamating tape for a temporary solution, but it is too thick to drop down into the tank.

I believe I need to install a new pipe.  I guess I will have to take out the dishwasher and empty the tank, but i have never seen the float and don’t know how easy it will be to install a new pipe in it.  Any ideas?  Also, what material is the  pipe made from?  It did not seem to be a normal pipe from a hardware shop; it is lightweight and brittle.

Thanks

Could you insert and glue a dowel into the broken ends?

Hi Kent

thanks for bringing me a selection of dowels!  (Kent’s boat Kristy is anchored beside me.)

The pipe walls are 1mm thick, the inside diameter is 12mm so a 10mm dowel is perfect for the job.  I might epoxy it in.

Glad to be able to help, Eamonn.  Did you have to cut away any of the pipe?  If so your float meter won’t read correctly without compensating.

Hi Eamonn

My wife broke our water stick last year. I inserted a hollow PVC tube with epoxy, reattached the broken end and wrapped with as thin a piece of fibreglass cloth I could find.. Then sanded nice and smooth. I hit it with some clear coat to finish and its as good as new! Before and after pic prior to clear coat..

Have fun!

In the end i used a 12mm dowel and sanded it down (stuck it in a drill) so it just fit inside the broken pipe. Then with a full tank of water i used strong glue on half the length and stuck it in the lower half. I waited 3 days (probably an overkill, but i am not moving any where with the virus lockdown) then glued the top of the pipe on. A thin black permanent marker hides the hairline crack remaining. My dowel was 28cm long. I’ll be keeping it closed in future except when momentarily checking....

Haha.. you'd have to ask her for the truth, but she just remarked it was an experience she'd rather forget..

I like a challenging repair anyway, so the punishment didn't last long!
