The name of the file indicates that the file might be the Aluminum C-Drive (ALU). One other time that this happened was in Panama. It broke due to excessive vibration caused by Volvo Panama not performing a correct alignment with a fixed coupling. In that case the owner opened the C-Drive and removed the broken shaft. He had it duplicated at a local and very rustic machine shop. That was years ago and still running fine. Remove the Horizontal Input side of the C-Drive (circled in green. The gear is pressed and keyed on the shaft. A hydraulic press removes the gear from the shaft. Hopefully, the gear is undamaged. Assuming you will do the fabrication at a machine shop, also replace bearings and seals. Be sure that you use a fixed coupling to align. You will most certainly need new rubber bushings for the Vetus soft coupling, and possibly a new Vetus soft coupling. The rubber bushings are available in many places, but if you need a new Vetus soft coupling, it is best to order it from Amel because it is slightly modified to make the installation easier. You may need this file to fabricate a fixed coupling: Bill

I had a similar failure on Kristy ~10 yrs ago. The break was at the point where the shaft stepped down in size, probably due to a malalignment due to failed It was repaired in Fajardo Puerto Rico by welding an ~8 mm thick sleeve over the two broken halves of the shaft, which overlapped the broken halves by ~30mm on each side. The sleeve had to be machined to fit. It remained in place and worked fine for several years until I had to replace the CDrive because of electrolytic damage to the prop shaft. There are a few pics in the SM 243 folder. Feel free to contact me directly if you would like. Kent Now boatless prior owner SV Kristy. -- Kent & Iris KRISTY

Oops, I believe my shaft failure was due to worn out engine mounts when the boat was about 14 years old. -- Kent & Iris KRISTY
