Changing from 1200w to 1500w Lofrans Tigress

Neil Meyrick

I'm currently servicing my Lofrans Tigress windlass. There is some distortion to the key that engages with the inner clutch cone of the chain gypsy, while at the same time I'm struggling to remove the rope drum and manual mechanism which is pretty welded together. I've tried penetrating oils and using a puller on the rope drum but without success so far.

I've come across a lightly used 24v Tigress in a local yard for a good cash price, and am considering swapping it out, however this spare windlass has the newer 1500w motor rather than the original 1200w one. From reading the messages on here it seems like a few people have made this change already so I'm hoping someone can answer a couple of questions?

1. As far as I can see the 100a breaker on the windlass circuit should be ample for the 1500w motor, and as a result I'm assuming that the wiring should be adequate to handle the loads. Has anyone had any issues using the 1500w motor with existing wiring and control box, or needed to upgrade the wiring to the motor?

2. The spare windlass is currently fitted with an 8mm gypsy, from what I've found it seems like it should be simple to change this for the 10mm one we are using, perhaps needing to change the clutch cones as well. I can't find anything saying that the 8mm version of the Tigress is different from the 10mm in any other way such as lower maximum load, but does anyone know of any difference other than the gypsy?

3. If I go ahead with this I will likely fit the existing rear cover with the Amel added foot switches (being renewed) and chain counter to the new windlass. I'll also need to transfer across the button which the chain counter senses to the new windlass, is this just fixed in place with silicone or adhesive?

Thanks

Hi Neil,

I will answer your first Question. Changed to 1500W in 2021. No problems so far. All works as with 1200W. But I will check the size of the wires next time I am on the boat. Wire size calculator recommends 25mm2 for 1500W load on 24V. For 1200W calculates 16mm2. I do not think that I will change anything in case if it is 16mm2, but will put a note in boat maintanance book.

Hi Neil

We changed the 1200 to 1500 motor a few years ago. We had no problem fitting it in. The control box is fine. The heavier control box from Lofrans is for windlasses starting at 1700 watts.

Best regards

Hi Neil,
We changed ours last year, everything is good. I think you are correct about the gypsy size. We also fitted a Lofrans wireless remote which we use from the cockpit or on deck but plan to fit floor switches as well.

Fantastic, thanks all three for the quick and helpful responses

Twisted keys and distorted key ways are a common issue caused by not greasing the brake cones. If shopping for a used windlass, you should know the condition of both sides of the shaft and attached parts.

Thanks Bill, yes I’ve checked that the manual recovery works and removed the gypsy to see the condition of the key on that side. I’ll see if I can check the condition of the shaft and key on the other side before committing.

thanks
Neil

One thing about the 1500W motor is that it's a little larger than the 1200W, which means that you if you have a 1500W motor, you can't slide the cover off  without loosening the windlass mounting bolts and raising it slightly as the cover impinges on the cabin top where it rises from the deck forward of the fwd cabin hatch.
I know this because I replced the motoir and tried to put the cover on and it wouldn't go!
Cheers

Hello,

I did not have that problem. Replacing was easy and cover slides on without any problem.  I did not measure the size of 1500W motor. From the photos I took it looks similar. Maybe power cables made a problem as it is tight space below cover.

Thanks for that Slavko - I've read a few times that the larger motor is longer but this one didn't look to be particularly. I've gone ahead and bought it, will pick it up in a couple of weeks and see how it is in place, but the motor doesn't look to be significantly longer than my current 1200w one

As a follow up to this I have now removed the old windlass and test fitted the new one, although not yet fitted it permanently. With the windlass in position and bolts loosely in place the rear housing is able to clear the deck without any problem.

Looking at the new 1500w motor side by side with the old 1200w one, it is slightly fatter at the rear, but the overall length is no more than the maximum length of the old motor.
