Cracks in the boom

Stefan Jeukendrup

After 2 consecutive unsuccesfull repairs, thef irst one held a year.
But the second one with reinforcements on both sides of the attachment block failed at the first sail again.
Eric suggested a sleeve could help.
Did any of you do this repair with succes before?

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions,

Sorry, no, I have no suggestion for a repair. I see that your boom needs replacing. I am curious how this happened.

Stefan,

I am not 100% sure where the cracks are. Main sheet block attachment or boom vang? Or both?
Do you crank the boom vang a lot? Did you fit a hydraulic ram?
Do you recall gybes in heavy wind with the boom vang super tight?

On a previous boat we were caught in a cyclone and got heavy damage.
Our local mast manufacturer managed to fit a sleeve (another tube inside the boom), held with rivets.
Then the new attachments were bolted to the boom (as opposed to welded like what you have now).

This was a heavy Nautor Swan we raced and cruised in big seas. It held perfectly over the years.
Maybe today they would use a carbon fiber sleeve?

Find somebody who can do that, get a price and compare to the price of a new boom.

Stefan,

Is the main sheet attached to the correct eye on the boom? It doesn't appear so in the picture.

Hi Stefan, I agree with Mark. Could you post a photo of the full length of the boom so we can see.

Mark, Good eye!

Danny , yes I agree.

The mainsheet block is too far forward, possibly attached where the preventer is normally attached. This gives the force of the sail too much leverage on the boom at the clew of the sail. BTW it is not unusual for me to see the main boom block attachments in the wrong place. When I have seen this before it because an owner wanted to change the Bimini height. Think about this before you change anything.

Thanks for the answers.

See pictures below.
Yes the middle "eye" is missing on my boat from an earlier similar event sailing downwind with main up from SA to St Helena.
No jibes occured.Just the continuous shock load by the swell did it.
Since then the front and rear "eyes" are used for sheet + preventer until the front "eye" also fell offon the same journey and it was welded in place in St Helena. That was 4 years ago..

Continued to use the front and rear "eyes" , the middle one is not there any longer.
Growing cracks slowly appeared over the past 4 years on 4 sides  around the forward "eye"
It was re-welded last week.
-unfortunately- worse cracks appeared again during only a small 17 nm test sail ( close reach, full main, apparent wind 25 knots gusts max.)

As a side note also small cracks on the mizzen and main boom close to the hinge. Possible cause: boom torsion  caused by swell+preventer?

Yes, using the middle eye must be somewhat better as it is further away from the middle of the boom.
Still basic things like these should be strong, reliable and durable on an ocean sailing vessel.

I have sailed this boat in the Indian ocean, South North Atlantic and the Med, 25.000 nm since 2017, never had a real storm ( > 30 knots) while sailing.

Heinz thank you sharing your solution.

Looking forward to further commends and solutions.

I am sure that you understand leverage. The repositioning the attachment of the mainsheet, gave much more leverage on the boom by the force of the sail at the clew. This is what broke your boom.

Stefan,

In a nice way, Bill is telling you what is wrong.

When I purchased my Amel, I was told by Joel Potter to NEVER rig the boom as you have. There is only ONE point in the boom that can handle the forces from the main sail. He explained that a temptation might exist to rig it differently so the window can open when the boom is to the port side. He said I would most certainly damage the boom if I rigged it differently. Looking at your vessel, I see he was correct.

And yes, I realize you have sailed your boat a long way. But, you have damaged it while doing so because it is not rigged correctly.

Solution: You need to replace the boom and rig it correctly.

With best regards,

Mark
