Genoa Swivel Tongue Replacement #replacement

rossirossix4

My genoa swivel has quite a bit of rotational play.  Top foil seems OK and otherwise the swivel seems OK.  Am I correct in assuming that I can just unscrew the 2 screws that hold it in place and replace it with the new aluminum tongue that I received from Maud?  If so is there anything I need to do to make sure I don't lose the ball bearings or that the plastic sleeve inside doesn't slip?

The bearings are kept in place by a delrin plug. This is a tight fit so shouldn’t drop out.
If you’re replacing the tongue it might be a good time to check the condition of the bearings to make sure none have broken.
Replacing them is easy. I used Harken bearings - on the Santorin the bearings are 9.5mm, don’t know if the SM is the same.

Hi Bob, if the tongue has worn through it is likely you are missing the slotted nylon pencil that fits in the grove for the tongue to engage with. This stops the alloy on alloy wear that causes the failure. I suspect riggers without specialist Amel experience are unaware of this and they go "missing" I am sure that is what happened to me. Amel should be able to supply this. If you want to know the simple method of entering the pencil into the track ask me.
Kind Regards

Have you got a photo of this ‘pencil’. There has never been one on my ownership of my Santorin.
Thanks

hi Ian, Sorry I don't and to photograph it I would have to drop my genoa, remove the tab and then I could only photograph it in the slot. It is white nylon, about 60mm long and its diameter is a little less than the foil groove. It has a slot to receive the tongue on the locating tab. It was a few years ago but I was able to get one from Amel.
Kind Regards

The plastic part you refer to is, I believe, an Amel update or modification. I understand it helps the "Aluminum Tongue" stay in shape and not wear out.
Bill Kinney gave me this photo from Martinique.

Danny & Bill,
Thank you for the information on the pin.
I will order a new tongue and pin and get them in place.
I shortened my forestay this winter by 1”, so it would be wise to get this protection in place asap

Hi Danny,
Yes,an easy way to  insert the nylon pencil would be good to learn.  I'd like not to take the car off and have to disconnect the forestay, etc.

Regarding replacing the tongue I'm curious if there is anything special to it.  It looks to me like I just take the 2 screws off, pull the old worn tongue out and place the new one in.

Bob

Bob,

Correct. But Adding the plastic guide (new part) will require removing the foil cap at the top of the foil, which will require losing and disconnecting the forestay and drilling out the rivets in the cap. Easy to do when re-rigging.

Once removed you can slide the plastic part in place

Hi Bob,
Yes removing the tongue is that easy. Two screws.
The easy way to fit the nylon pencil:
I had mine and found it was larger in diameter than the slot into the track in the foil. It was a few years ago but I am sure I was trying in the wider section sail bolt rope feed. I could not see an easy way and was considering some difficult dismantling options. I got a friendly (and very good) rigger to discuss the problem with. We talked through the options and he stood there holding the pencil over the slot. He said, hey look at that over there and while I was distracted gave the pencil a sharp whack with a plastic hammer, Done and dusted. Take care not to let go of the pencil until you have the tongue in place. It will drop to the bottom very quickly.
Kind Regards

Thanks everyone.  I'll try to fit a nylon pencil and include it in my next Amel order.  For anyone referencing this in the future:  The 2 tongue screws were a bit hard  to remove so as a precautionary measure I hit them up with PB Blaster and then CorosionX which may have helpted.  I pushed a small shop towel into the bottom of the swivel assembly to make  sure that the black collar did not move and cause problems.  In my particular case it was a bit difficult to remove the tongue after I removed both screws--even with 2 picks it wasn't budging so I drilled a small hole centered between the screw holes and screwed in a screw.  Using a ViceGrips I was able to pul it straight out.  It was fairly worn so I am gladd I replaced it.  Photos are here https://photos.app.goo.gl/hgsrw88tL8wgikwt9
