Has anyone made a Hard Top instead of a Bimini for Super Maramu #solution

For something like that I always recommend Peakes Yard in Trinidad. Be careful about changing the geometry of the main boom to the mainmast. The boom should rest perpendicular with the sail furled. Some people have raised the aft of the boom. Don't do it. This is a project that you do not want the lowest bidder and you want to begin with a well-thought-out plan. I have some photos of an A54 hardtop made in Turkey here: https://preparetocastoff.blogspot.com/p/emek-marine_3.html Bill

Hi Michael & Robyn,
Saol Eile has a hard top which replicates pretty exactly the shape of the folding hood. I can't take any credit as it was added somewhere in Malaysia by her previous owner. Some pics below will give the idea. Maybe this can help with inspiration - feel free to ask me any questions if anything unclear. Cheers Tom Crosbie Saol Eile SM#228 |

Here's a link to a YT video from a few years ago.... This may be more than you are willing to do, but I think its pretty cool what can be done!

That A54 hardtop was made in Tunisia. It appeared to me to be an "added-on" top. I think it is difficult to get the right look and function. Bill

Hi All, The below Hardtop inspired me to make my hardtop using solar panels. Very Best Barry "SV Lady Penelope II" Amel 54. #17

Thank you all for the responses; definitely gives me inspirations to think about.
And yes Bill R. point well taken to keep the geometry of the main boom horizontal. -- Michael & Robyn SY RIPPLE SM2K # 417 |

We have thought about this as an option many times. I think the best solution would be to remove the existing spray hood and create a mould that copied the base of the current spray hood but extended it to respect the required clearances hopefully allowing raising the clearance to enter the companion way a little to both allow the washboard to be removed properly and to reduce the frequency of hitting one’s head when entering the boat. But also done correctly I think this could end in a result that looked less like a bolt on. One of the main expenses though I expect would be this initial moulding work which probably makes a “one of” creation prohibitively expensive. However if a number of boats wanted this maybe it then becomes viable?

I fully agree with you Andrew, It's may be time to set up a community project and find a way to make a small series of hard-tops in line witch the bases that you prose. Jean Luc MERTZ CottonBay SM316 Le 16/03/2023 à 10:31, Andrew &

I think the idea of Andrew will be the best looking one. For having been on an A54 with a hardtop similar to the one of Soleil Bleu, I think it should go all the way back to the mizzen mast. In adition, the possibility to remove the engin or generator should be given, so some sort of bold on middle part would be necessary.

Does modification to hard top bimini cause any problems with insurance? Is it regarded as a structural alteration?
I recall a posting of an insurance claim denial because of modifications in the past. -- Paul Harries Prospective Amel Buyer |

IMO - Due to the
variances with policies, this would be best if posed to an
insurance company. But, it does serve as a good reminder any
modifications like this (or lithium upgrades, engine changes
etc.) need to be declared and approved. Also, with any changes
to documentation, it is important to keep the underwriter in
the loop. When we changed the flag of our vessel from BVI to
UK, the insurance company was very specific about where the
vessel could be flagged to continue with the policy.
With best regards,

Hi Andrew, I too played with the idea of a hard top but after a lot of thought opted for an improved soft top. I have recently completed a new soft top, and tweaked the design to give a bit more head room and a bigger forward looking non opening window and a looking up window. It includes a top that goes back to a rail behind the mizzen and roll down side and back curtains, So we can fully enclose the whole cockpit or open it up. The section from the Amel original to the mizzen is zip fastened and removable as are the back and side curtains. I used the Amel tube supports without modification. The extra height was achieved by simply altering their angle. The greater size of the forward looking window was achieved by the same method. The vinyl used came with a staggering 8 year warranty. Al in all I think what I have is a much better option and it looks great. Cost $8000 NZD
Kind Regards
Danny

Hi Eloi ,
I see that you are in Puerto Williams . That makes us very jealous ! We are in Ushuaia , alas on land as our boat is in Greece . We have come for a few days to walk down memory lane.
18 years ago to the day we sailed from Puerto Williams to Porto Torro and on to Cape Horn , rounding on 17th March 2005. We had such calm weather that one of us could stay on board whilst the other two ( we had our son with us ) went ashore to
meet the lighthouse keeper . His house then was of corrugated iron tied in place with steel wires and concrete blocks.
On our return to Micalvi we celebrated with the best pisco sours in Chile ( rather a lot of them!)
I hear that in PW at the moment is a disabled English guy on a catamaran waiting for a window to go to the Horn . His name is Tom . Friend of a friend of ours . If you see him wish him Bon voyage and buen suerte !
What are your plans ?

Hi Nicolas
We would be interested in this project – particularly as we are just along in Canet-en-Roussillon. Are you able to send more details?

Hi Paul, I’m working on one now. It’s an adaptation of Victor Molero’s adaptation of the Lady Annila design. If I can ever get them to write me an email back, I want to have it populated with Solbian flexible solar panels directly integrated providing 680 or possibly 722 watts. It’s a pretty penny for the Solbian panels, but the way I see it is that adding a solar arch would cost me just as much. And, given that I’m 188 cm tall, the surface mount panels would still allow the maximum headroom (no, I have no intention of raising the boom, so I’ll still have to duck a bit). So far I’ve only got a wooden prototype up, and if there were movement on a dominant design, I’d consider not making it myself.
