So, Courtney, it's going down to 41° F / 5°C tonight in Brunswick! Brrr.
Give it a try and it will: 1 - clear and burn out any dust in the burner and ducts, 2 - freshen up the diesel fuel in the pump and supply line 3- scare the livin' bejeezus out of any critters having moved into the intake plenum (I had a hive of paper wasps that stunck like crazy for days but cleared up). Or, as someone said, "use it or lose it". Of course I'm sure you're comfy with the reverse cycle A/C and at the dock the diesel exhaust is not acceptable, but occasional running is good. Hello Eric, Yes, I have a Wabasto heater in my 54. They work great, but if you haven't run it in a while the first usage will have a terrible smell. That goes away. The air intake is below the mizzen mast in the cockpit. Check in the portside locker of the cockpit and check that the vent piping is all secure to the Wabasto. Sometimes they won't start on the first try if not used in a while. So you need to start it and wait, you should hear the heater fan, the fuel pump should sound like a small thumping, I can hear my pump while standing in the passageway. The pump is in the engine compartment next to the fuel tank. if it shuts off just turn the switch off, wait a minute try again, and repeat. Cheers, Randall A54#56

Dear Amelians,
I'm gathering information before installing a hyronic diesel heating system aboard my 54. There are a couple questions regarding the installation on the 54s If the install was a FACTORY (Amel) install: 1. Where did they vent the exhaust? 2. Was it an Espar heater? 3. Is it an air unit? 4. Did they mount the heater in the port locker or the ER? If it was an installation that was done aboard but after purchase, and not by Amel: 1. Where did they vent the exhaust? 2. Espar or Webasto unit? 3. Air or Hydronic? 4. Heater mounted in Port Locker or ER? 5. If it's an Espar, and it's a hydronic, are your heating elements fan units, or straight radiator elements inside the boat? Any feedback is appreciated. Courtney (s/v Trippen): I'll get the fuel bladder pictures up soon. Sorry for the delay. Best Regards to All, Jeff s/v Spirit Amel 54 #14 Shinnecock, NY

I would very much like to hear what you do in the end as I want to install heating in my 54. I asked Amel and the answer was not satisfactory. Peter Forbes Carango Amel 54 #035 La Rochelle 00447836 209730

Hello and all the best for 2021, Our Amel 54 #162 was the showboat on the Paris 2010 and Düsseldorf boat show in 2011, so already with lot of extra things - but no diesel heating -when we made the contract on the Boatshow in Paris. So thanks to my wife it was fixed in the contract, that Amel will do the installation of the Webasto airheating system. They did it in perfect way and told us, that it is the extra with bigges work to add after the boat is already built. That time pricelist showed for Dieselheating 11.000 €+Vat when order comes with the boat. We are very happy with the heating. Essential also in the Med-sea. We never used the AC for heating. The only way for heating while sailing is a dieselheating. My recommendation: If you are in La Rochelle and Amel could make the installation a Webasto air dieselheating would be my first choice. Modification with one extraoutlet near the helmstation with possibility to shut down. If elsewhere I would install a hydronic dieselheater the way SV Delos did.Perhaps you can get some more informations. Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54#162

Hi Jeff I'm not on the boat until Saturday so the only question I can answer now is that it is an air unit. I'll try and get you the other answers this weekend.

Hi Jeff,

I have a 54 with Webasto forced air heating system fitted by Amel in the factory from new. The unit itself is located high up in the port cockpit locker with the exhaust straight out the port topside. The air intake is in the mizzen sheet/halyard cubby hole. The system works well, and I make a point to run it every now and then even in the summer. Nick S/Y Amelia AML 54-019 Leros Greece.
