Is there an Amel Rigger en route from Italy to Spain?
Daniel Alexander Thompson
Dear Amelians
We are en-route from Brindisi, Italy to Southern Spain (perhaps Marina Almerimar) We will sail via the Strait of Messini, Palermo then Sardinia, before stops in Ibiza and Mallorca. Does anybody know an Amel qualified rigger en route (preferably in mainland Spain)? A rigger who could check my Mango rig and potentially carry out work on the rig? Can anybody recommend a marina in Spain which has a lift for fifty footers and has Amel qualified people on hand to check the boat for an Atlantic crossing? I'm currently only deploying a reefed mainsail because i don't half full confidence in this rig. Blessings Daniel Oronia Mango #14 |

Hello,
We changed our standing rig with Nacho of Mediterranean rigging in Port Blanis N of Barcelona. Very professional and experience in large boats. chose him since he had multiple and recent references. very satisfied of his work. Denis |

Personally, I would prefer to stop in Hyeres where Amel has a service base with all the contacts for Amel experienced riggers

Contact Mallorca Yacht Services, Peter Kukluck, at +34 619 658 312 He is a brilliant engineer and works closely with an excellent rigger. The rigger in question has been J24 world champion for many years. Good luck, Jean-Pierre Germain, formerly Eleuthera, SM 007 On 31 Aug 2022, at 06:57, Louis Trepanier <louis.alepa@...> wrote:

Hi Daniel
I just did something similar. We sailed from Siracusa in Sicily to Valletta in Malta. Our rigging was sent by Acmo to Marina di Valletta where Nicky Sammut replaced our rig in a couple of days. We sailed from there to Carloforte in Sardinia and on to Palma..and now in Ibiza. Nicky did a great job and was a pleasure to do business with. Richie Why Knot SM2K#261 Salinas, Ibiza |

Malta may not be too far out of your way for the rigger I recommend.

Exactly, I think Nicky is one of the best: https://preparetocastoff.blogspot.com/p/nicky-rigging-marine-services.html

Thank you, Denis, Louis, Jean-Pierre, Richie and Bill. This is a great list to consider.
I was up the mast yesterday and there is actually a bit of rust on all four of the lesser main mast shrouds. So it might be the mizzen and a reefed jib to Malta lol Blessings Daniel Oronia Mango #14 |

I have to be very careful what i say here. Please be patient with me.
I will obviously rig my boat in steel. But dyneema is insanely strong. Steel may not hold the mast up under gust loading or capsize. Why would one not install two or four dyneema safety lines from the top of the mast to the gunwale. The dyneema wouldn't even need to apply tension to the mast. To avoid any chafing, they would not touch the steel shrouds and would be mounted within the confined protection of the steel shrouds. Boats often carry a dyneema emergency shroud. Why not have emergency shrouds permanently mounted? Other than aesthetics; i don't see the downside. |

Hi folks, |

Nicky - of Malta fame - inspected my rig, yesterday. He was extremely thorough and already knew exactly what to look for vs the rigging of this boat. I can't recommend him highly enough. I also learned a lot about what I was doing wrong when ascending the mast myself.
Big issue! The bolt that fixes the pin for my triatic and main backstay was missing. Could have been de-masted at any time. About ten other issues I will need to fix. My forty year old rig is in miraculously good condition for its age but it will need replacing soon. My Atlantic crossing cannot be done with this old rig. We will have to fly to Panama. I asked Nicky about ACMO rigging. He thought that it held up better than the steel from the Scandinavian manufacturers. Thank you for all the recommendations I do think that I will be gettng Nicky to re-rig my boat. Daniel Oronia Mango #14 |
