Lewmar acrylic lens replacement on Amel 54

Barry Connor

I need to replace all my Lewmar arcylic lens on the 7 Lewmar hatches. I have measured the outside and they tally with Lewmar specs for the size 50,54,60,and 70.
I measure the actual lens size and the size does not match the Lewmar specification for the actual lens.
Example:
Lewmar size 50: My overall outer measurements, 448x578mm. Same as Lewmar spec.
Lewmar size 50 lens: Lewmar specification measurement for lens is 377x507mm. My measurement of Lens inside the seal 387x517.

Can anyone put me straight on this?
These acrylic lenses do not seem difficult to install after looking at the Lewmar video, don't want to order the wrong size.

Thanks

Barry,

I’m curious as to why they need replacing – UV damage? Should I be concerned about mine?

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,
No, not UV damage. The boat yard workers in Monastir, Tunisia sprayed/spilt a liquid all over my topside. The deck polished out OK but all the acrylic hatches, port lights and widescreens need replacement. When we bought in 2015 all windows were perfect no signs of any marks or UV affects, now we have streaks and blotches everywhere.
I don’t know if any Amel 54 owners have had to replace the acrylics before. If anyone has any experience with replacement of the acrylics I would really appreciate any advise. This is becoming a challenge. A have had some traders wanting to cut out and replace, don’t know what quality acrylic I might get. I only want the genuine supply from manufacturers.
Would appreciate any advise that anyone has.

Hi Barry,

I would not worry too much about the size difference. Do make sure you are looking at the medium size profile series as opposed to the Ocean series and the low-profile series.

Word of advice; also order new hinge pins as you are likely forced to break the existing ones out when removing the hatch. Lewmar did not put anti-seize paste on the hinge-pins (stainless pin in alloy hole). Also the small grub-screws holding the two halves of the frame together may prove a pig to remove. When replacing the lens most definitely also replace the seal that holds the lens, you will get leaks otherwise.
I had all the hatches done last year, but did not require new lenses. Only the seals were replace because of leakage.

I will make sure I replace both the hinge pins and grub screws.
I found one Lewmar agent with some lens in stock. I am asking them to give me the actual lens measurements.

Yes, that’s who I have on my list to contact when they open.
Are you near Clarke’s Court Boatyard, can you let me know when they reopen? I am having new brackets made here in Le Marin so as to convert the opening windscreens to double hydraulic pistons.
I need to get my Bimini recovered also. Where did you have the shade cover made, it looks good and efficient in your photo?

Hi,

I would recommend buying complete Lewmar hatches and throwing away the frames. I did this on my last boat and it was cheaper than just buying the lid or all the small parts. The exchange was completed in a short time and looked fantastic.

Hi Arnold,
Thanks, I have been looking at that and the price for a complete new Lewmar hatch is not much difference than the cost of the parts and labor. They have to take off, take the hatch away and bring it back to fit again. Repaired is never as good as new!

Hi Paul,

<image002.jpg>

Thanks

Hi Oliver,
Your anchored just in front of me, closer to the beach.
Caraibe Marine want to take them off. I don't think that they would take them apart and replace the seals, lens and handles whilst onboard. The price that I am seeing from them is about the same as getting complete new hatches from Defender and shipping them here. Not sure on how to do the import/clearance here in Le Marin. Have you imported anything during this lockdown?

Barry,

If I understand correctly, the plexiglass on your boat is relatively new and you think the current damage is due to some chemical or coating while in a boatyard rather than UV damage?    If the structure (no crazing or cracks) of the material is still sound, it should be possible to wet sand and then polish to remove the coating and restore at least most of the clarity.  If you want to give this a try I would suggest  trying this is in a spot that is not critical for viewing such as a hatch lens to insure that the process works before doing the windshield.  It is best to use clean or filtered water for the wet sanding and have calm conditions that won’t stir up grit.  How coarse to start with depends on how much material that you need to remove but I would start with around 600G for the initial test and adjust as needed.  Using a softish rubber pad can help for the sanding , you want to sand evenly.  Work your way up to at least 2000 grit then use a medium polish followed by a super fine such as Finesse.    Use a soft lambs wool pad with a variable speed buffer and avoid building up too much heat by moving the pad around and not applying too much pressure.  For the test you could do this by hand but the results will not be as good.  We then used the Mequiars #50 cleaner wax and continue to use this on the new plexiglass for a bit of protection and to polish out micro scratches.   When we bought our Amel,  the original 29 year old windshield was almost opaque and we brought it back enough to being able to use the boat for a few seasons until we could replace the plexiglass.

Best of luck,

James

Hi Oliver,

To replace the lens you need to split the two halves of the frame of the moving part. These are basically two C-shapes that are mirrored relative to each other. The eindpoints are connected with small screws and a connection part that slides in the frame. The split is across the length axis of the boat with one split between the hinges. To take it apart you must separate the moving part from the part screwed to the deck. Getting the screws out is a pain and is better to be done in a workshop.
But first you need to get the hinge-pins out, that can be a big problem as well. On our 54 they used a trick to break the hinge-pins to free the moving part. In the workshop they removed the remains and replace the rubbers. Back on the boat they used new pins and adequate quantities of anti-seize paste (Duralac/Tefgel).
I agree with a previous contributor that it may be cheaper to buy new hatches. The problem I saw was that Amel used a high-gloss frame and all the ones I saw had a matte frame.

Hi Oliver and Uno,

I am searching online the prices and availability for repair and replacement. I have onboard and always use Duralac as any S/S with Aluminum is a problem. I can see already the problem of separating these hatches.

I have not found any "PINK" Lewmar lenses for the MK2 medium profile hatches, only clear and grey. The Lewmar Ocean series hatches appear to be pink.

Did Amel have a special color lens made?
Did Amel have a special order hatch made by Lewmar?

All the Goiot port lights are smoked grey. The windscreens and side acrylics are clear.

Can any members advise me about getting shipments from the US cleared in Martinique?

Thanks in advance
Best
