Looking for agent/surveyor in south of France (Med)

WASABI - Rudolf Waldispuehl

Hi Olivier et all,

I was very happy that you surveyed my A54 in Marmaris 5 years ago. All kind of extra information and tips where very helpful for me as a new AMEL owner. And of course, you did an excellent job by pointing the important parts need to be replaced or just need to be checked in one or 2 years. Your Fee was worth each EURO for me.

As a full year “leave a board” I’m still very happy with WASABI (PAGANEL) and I learned a lot about my A54, especially thanks such a great AMEL Forum-Group.

Hello Martijn,

You're new and you cannot verify the positive or negative reviews? Well, I think you should just stop talking about me.

You are on this forum since february 2nd this year, so, you should know that saying bad things is out of this forum's policy (Bill, right?), moreover if you're not talking about your own bad experience but about someone else's.

Private and anonymous messages are, in my opinion, coward ways.

Saying that, on a survey, I missed osmosis, structural problems or engine issues, is indeed a bad thing.

Sometimes, my clients just don't say if they are happy of my work, but they ask a lot of technical questions that I try to answer the best I can.

Sometimes they are very happy about my work and the day (or two) we spent together during the boat's inspection.

They may be not happy sometimes but strangely, I don't recall any of them coming back to me after the survey and telling me I missed a structural problem (or osmosis, or engine or rigging). Maybe you could refresh my memory and disclose the name(s) of these people that you mentioned.

Oh, yes, I remember one man who recently sent me a list of issues that I did not discover during the survey 4 years ago(!) and that are still not repaired (!), and he's asking me what I think of his boat's value now.

But this man is divorcing and trying to lower his SM's value as he doesn't not want to give too much money to his ex wife (she contacted me about the current boat's value before he did...).

I'm not perfect. During a survey, I may miss some issues, but I always try to be thorough about the main parts of the vessel.

I would like to thank the people who gave me some support on this forum, but I also kindly ask that you don't say I'm the best (Bill...). It's not true and there are lots of good surveyors worldwide.

There is no championship for the best leisure crafts surveyor and I'm sure that any surveyor who spends a full day aboard a 54 foot boat will discover all the main issues there are.

Martijn, you mentioned also the high fee. You're right and some people don't buy my services because of the fee, but this is another matter.

There are very good cheap cars, and very good expensive cars. That's life.

Be careful if you choose the cheapest surveyor, but also if you choose the cheapest boat.

You may have a hard time finding a surveyor that suits your wishes.

Olivier.

Thanks everybody for the (lengthy) posts with very valuable information. I don't know where to begin to respond. :-)

Regarding Olivier: I don't want to stir things up in here. If everybody considers him the best. That is fine by me. I just got messages of people who experienced problems (and heard about others with similar results) but rather post that to me via private message. It was about missing issues during the survey regarding the engine, osmosis, grounding, rigging, electrical and structural issues. I'm new and I can neither verify the positive reviews nor these negative ones.

David: Thanks for the great post. I have updated my spreadsheets with your tips/calculations :-)

After some phone calls, quite some emails and messages I get the feeling there is plenty of negotiation space when buying a used Amel. I see prices all over the place and when I compare boats (state and price) using Bill's lists I understand now some sales end-up with extreme percentages off the initial asking price.

Which brings me to my next question regarding 20-30 year old Amels: What percentage do negotiations tend to bring the price down from asking price, on average?

Martjin,

I also highly recommend Olivier.  I used his services twice.  Once to survey an SM in the Netherlands that I did NOT purchase and once in Martinique to survey the SM that I did purchase and have now owned for 5 years, the last year living aboard and cruising fulltime.  I am extremely happy with both outcomes.  Oliver's knowledge of Amel's is unsurpassed.  He is also an excellent communicator and a wonderful teacher.  If you join him for the survey (which he strongly encourages you to do) you will learn a great deal about the boat in a very short time.  Five years later, Olivier still answers any questions that I email to him.  I suspect that you will not find another surveyor in the world who will do that and if even if you did, they most likely won't know the answer to your question while Olivier almost always will.

No one is perfect, but anyone who was dissatisfied with Olivier's survey will most likely be dissatisfied with anyone's survey.

I am sorry for causing this discomfort. It was in no way my intention to make things personal. Unfortunately this did happen as the focus shifted from finding answers to my questions to the text that was only written to support the questions in the first place. Which I regret happened because of me.

I appreciate the community and its efforts to help eachother out and just hope to find (some of) the answers we and other new or aspiring Amelians look for.

Hi All, thanks Olivier,

Olivier did a survey of my AMEL 54 #144 just a few month ago ( may 2022). After having bought my 54 new from Amel in La Rochelle, it was time after 13 years to have a professional survey of what should be done and also a independet opinion of what the state my boat is. I was also not sure if the virbrations of the Engine are normal or not. It turned out, that my vibrations are totaly normal and I was just to fixed on the issue.
I try to keep Santa Isabella in best shape as possible. I only replace original Amel parts (if possible).
I believe I know my boat after 13 years very well, but Olivier still showed me very important details.
For me he was worth every Euro - even if his recommendation list did not find any big issue, there were a couple of small things and to does I did not know. During the day he stayed on board I also learned a lot of thing's I did not know about the AMEL 54 (And I had two weeks AMEL training at purchse, 3 weeks professional AMEL experienced Skipper at the beginning and now own her since 13 years.

I did not want to sell my boat. I hired Olivier check the state of Santa Isabella to help me keep Santa Isabella in best shape.

I can highly recommend Olivier and I don't think you will find a better survey for AMEL boats than him.

Hi Mattijn,

We purchased our Santorin in S France while in the US with the assistance of Jerome Fragnon  in Antibes,  very excellent and trustworthy broker.  He speaks English quite well and although not an Amel specialist is familiar w them.
Michel Charpentier who is semi retired is the only Amel specific broker I know of but personally I would use Jerome, but either ok and do get Olivier Beaute to do the survey if at all possible.

Good luck.

Hi Dave,

Thank you very, very much for this incredibly valuable tip. We are currently in the process of buying an Amel with the help of Jerome. He is absolutely fantastic, as you mentioned. Without him we just would not succeed in this market. Thanks again.

Kind regards, Martijn

Thats great Martijn, congrats on the new boat.
We are in the process of acquiring a private sale SM and have hired Jerome to do the paperwork and hold funds in escrow.
He may have mentioned our Santorin sloop for sale, as we will be selling Liesse if the SM deal goes through.
We ll be in the Med next season, perhaps we ‘ll cross paths somewhere.
Best,  Dave.

Hi Martijn,

I would definitely recommend Olivier Beaute atlanticyachtsurvey@....

He worked at Amel for over 20 years and he was the person who I went to Amel school with in 2002 when Kimberlite was delivered.

He knows more about Amels than any other person on the planet.

He lives on the North Coast of France , however his airfare and experience is well worth the cost.

Perhaps we do! Jerome indeed mentioned your sloop to us and shared some details. From what I saw she really looks amazing! We were in the market for a ketch though. Good luck with the purchase of that SM!
