Hi! Our Mainsail Furler stopped working. I took the motor and gearbox off the mast to install the new gearbox and motor I bought from Amel. But could not get the item in the top of gearbox off, (Picture). How does it come off? And also the rubber seals were bad and were not included with the gearbox??? I put it all the old stuff back again and now it works??? Where can I see how this work is done? I have the Bible but there is not much about how to change the motor and gearbox on the mainsail Furler. How is this done? Who has done this? Fair Winds to all. and Kindest Regards Arthur Sundqvist SM435, VISTA

There is a rod welded to the top piece that bolts to the top of the Anderson line winch. That rod goes through the winch and is visible at the bottom of the gearbox. It usually has a cup-like washer bolted to it. Remove that washer and bolt and with a special puller, push the rod out from the bottom. It will be difficult if this has not been done in the past 2 years. I will also send photos of a special puller Amel Martinique uses.
I'll post a procedure for you to download.

Arthur,
If you would like to download the Amel Book Supplement File "Outhaul Gearbox Service SM - 54 Service "
Agree to the terms and then download Outhaul Gearbox Service SM - 54 Service.pdf (it should be at the top of the list) Bill | CW Bill Rouse Amel Owners Yacht School | | | 720 Winnie, Galveston Island, Texas 77550 | |

Hi Bill, Arthurs photo was of the furler gearbox, your advice refers to the out haul gear box. Arthur the piece you photograph is attached to a shaft that goes through then gearbox. It is alloy. For what ever reason some years ago I was completely unable to remove the shaft. I was in Fiji at the time. I took the gearbox to an engineering firm in Lautoka. Despite applying tonnes of pressure with a hydraulic press it was immoveable. Being in the middle of the Pacific and 1200 miles from home I had to find a solution. The engineers drilled the shaft out and turned up a new one in stainless. An extreme measure. I had them ensure a little more clearance fit for the shaft. The same problem occurs with the shaft through the outhaul gearbox. Prevention? Remove them twice a tear, grease and refit.
Kind Regards
Danny

Arthur, Removing the mast furler motor and gearbox is easy. First you need to make sure that the cable to the motor is free and can be pulled out of the mast cavity a bit....mine was held on by a plastic clamp with a rivet....I drilled out the rivet and removed the plastic clamp. Then you can loosen the 4 bolts on each side of the mast where the furler gearbox is and the whole assembly will slide down. Remove the bolts one by one until the motor and gearbox come off the mast...careful, it's heavy. Then you can remove the top and bottom mounting plates from the gearbox, take off the gearbox from the motor. Then you have the geabox with the stuck shaft. If you are lucky, an engineering shop with a hydraulic press can push the shaft out,( if not you may have to resort to the Danny solution, or buy a new gearbox and shaft from Maud at Amel.) Then you can clean it all up so the shaft slides easily in and out of the gearbox and reassemble it all with grease or Never Sieze on the shaft...and dismantle and clean it regularly in future.
BTW, I take out the shaft from the boom gearbox often after sailing, and when not sailing for sometime, I take it out and stow it below. I grease the gearbox drive and keyway and stuff a rag in the gearbox frame on the boom, then wrap waterproof tape around it, and tape over the hole on the top of the Anderson line pulley, to keep water out. return to the boat, take off the tape, pullout the rag, grease the shaft and put it back in. I now have zero issues with that, whereas in the past I had serious problems, like it seems you have now.
Good luck Alan Elyse SM437
Sorry Arthur, I didn;t see your pics before I wrote this.....of course you have the gearbox off.....everythuing I wrote after that still applies. Cheers Alan

Thank you for sharing Alan. I will from now on look after the furler and outhaul gearboxes. Take them apart and grease like once a year. And when not sailing. Keep them protected. You Lear the hard way sometimes. Kindest Regards. Arthur Skickat från min iPhone
