Main Seachest Seacock Size Confirmation?

Bill Kinney

We are going to need to replace the main seacock under our seachest.  I assume this is a 1 1/2" BSPP thread fitting.  Can someone who has done this confirm the sizing and thread spec?

As a straight thread fitting, I don't have access to the thread to check until AFTER I take it apart.  And if it is a BSPP thread it is going to be a special order here.  I REALLY don't want to be sitting on the hard, waiting for the right part to be delivered this far down island!

Thanks!

Bill,

I can't help you with the size or threads.  However, If you are referring to the main seacock below the strainer that feeds the seachest, I can tell you that we had to replace ours and purchased it directly from Amel.  It was shipped in a few days.  The cost late 2018 was 195 Euro for the parts in the photo. Invoice Description - Kit plomberie et raccord filtre eau de mer VETUS/ Set of plumbing and connectors
(plastic and steel).

All the best,

I confess to have an (admittedly somewhat irrational and emotional) preference for the original bronze valve over plastic for this application.  Especially since with a plastic valve, I don't see any way to connect the metal thru-hull fitting to the bonding system?

Hi Bill,

As I understand, Amel is building all new vessels with plastic through hulls that match the valves; this obviates the bonding connection entirely. My surveyor has strongly recommended changing all the below-water through hulls with plastic, and as I look at the original through hull and valve for the forward head and anchor wash, I can only imagine the pinkish, brittle bronze just ready to snap. I’m hoping it’ll hold through a on-week voyage to the haulout facility where I’ll be able to change it out for plastic.

One of the first things I did was get a set of wooden bungs, as the boat, curiously, was not fitted with them or the cleaning crew that prepared the boat for sale got overzealous.

Cheers,

Bill,

I don't know on SM but on my A54 it's 2" or 50 mm thread on seacock. As of BSPP I can't be 100% sure but I think it is as all other valves I replaced on boat were BSPP

I replaced seacock ball valve which I ordered from Sofomarin. Model RXVD50 - RBS 2 VOIES DN50 - 2". Price was EUR 77,77 before VAT

Best Regards,

Just to close the loop here, the threads on our thru hull to the seachest were, as expected, 1 1/2” BSPP (British Standard Pipe, Parallel).

We went with a Groco valve.  The stainless steel handle, a grease fitting to keep the internals of the valve filled with grease, a handle that can be configured to close in either direction, and an actual connection point for the bonding wire were all significant upgrades over the original.

The swap out was uneventful.  It took a good bit of leverage to get the valve started turning (24” pipe wrench, plus another extension), but after that all was easy and simple.

There were no structural problems with the old valve, but the chrome plating on the ball was pitted and coated with calcium from decades of biology.  This left it so hard to turn, we were worried about shearing off the valve stem.  We had already bent the handle.  We might see if we can refurbish it and keep it as a spare.

I am surprised to hear there are surveyors who are recommending that all metal thruhulls be replaced.  I am not completely opposed to “plastic” fittings, certainly Forespar and TrueDesign make excellent products.  But the idea that bronze has become unacceptable in this application is just wrong. Many of the mass-market boat builders in Europe had for years used totally crap valves made of brass that basically had a 5 year service life.  I fear this has contaminated surveyors who can’t tell the difference between quality bronze and crap brass, and take the safe road of condemning them all.
