Onan 11kw white smoke on running

Billy Newport

Hi
The fun continues on Coder's shakedown cruise. Yesterdays problem were two fold:

The generator raw water pump appears to be leaking. Worked this with Bill.
The other issue is the generator makes white smoke as it warms up from the dry exhaust.

The generator has about 840 hours on it. Has been serviced properly as far as I know. Denis (previous owner) was pretty meticulous. The boat was on the hard for 12 months while being sold but it was winterized, it was recommisioned, surveyed and then we got it in late June. We changed the oil and filters on it after purchase. Oil level looks good (full) and is "clean" on the dip stick.

Generator is running with no codes (I have the simple generator panel so no other data).

I am trying to get an onan field tech to come to the boat (Port Washington, NY mooring right now). The generator 5 year warranty is still in effect as far as I know.

Currently charging batteries with the engine but can't make water with out the gen.

Any ideas appreciated.

Hi Billy. If the white ‘smoke’ quickly dissipates, it is most likely caused by water getting into the combustion process. If it hangs in the air and leaves a sheen on the water, it is most likely from a petroleum source. I have seen the water caused type come from a blown head gasket. The petroleum caused type usually comes from lubrication oil or a failing injector but I have seen the odd case of the transmission cooler failing and putting transmission fluid into the raw water that eventually gets injected into the exhaust elbow and makes a weird wispy type of smoke. Good luck with it.

All the best,

Joel

I don't see any evidence of oil films etc on the water which I'd imagine would be there but everything I can read says white smoke is unburned diesel so I'm surprised there is no sheen/film in the water at all. Still waiting on ONAN to call me back.

To your point Joel, it looks to me like water in the combustion process some how. Coolant levels look fine. The raw water pump is leaking but I don't know how that could be allowing water in the combustion process.

Normally white smoke is either water or unburned diesel. Maybe it could also be contaminated fuel.

The main engine I presume is not blowing white smoke???

If the main engine is fine, maybe you could try replacing the fuel filter element on the generator.

Does the generator engine function normally apart from the smoke?

Does it get up to full operating temperature under load say 80 degrees celcius?

Hi Billy,

To check the temperature, you need an infrared heat sensor. Really handy for checking temperature of the various parts of the engine…

Possibly leak around the motor head gasket ???

Symptoms that indicate a defective head gasket are white or light blue smoke coming from the engine, low engine coolant and oil, a leak in the muffler or gasket. extension vessel, or mayonnaise that has formed on the oil filler cap.

Main engine is working fine. The boat has dual RACALs before the engine and genset. The raw water output looks limp to me, I have no context for a normal flow as the boat is new to me.

I'm going on the fact there is water not diesel in the dry exhaust. The main engine is fine. The gen raw water pump is leaking a little. The raw water thru hull looks weak. The generator worked correctly despite the white smoke (watermaker/water heater/both battery chargers). I haven't use it since I saw the smoke. The coolant level looks normal to me in the expansion tank (half way between cold and hot).

  • I will change the gen fuel filter after checking for water in it. If thats it then great.
  • I will change the impellor and o-ring, hopefully, it's all there. Otherwise thats why the raw water outlet is poor.
If I still have white smoke at that point then it's time for a tech. Working today so I'll get to this Sat.

Thanks
Billy

If I were you I would sort out the raw water pump leak, change the fuel filter and then run it at full load for a few hours and see how it performs.

To finish the thread. We replaced the fuel filter, replaced raw water pump (ebay 320 bucks), changed the oil. No white smoke. We suspect the oil was overfilled on last change and that caused the white smoke. The oil level was maybe 2 to 3mm past max in dip stick.
