Onan genset problem

Eloi Bamberg

Hello,
My Onan genset 7kv is starting normally, but when it comes to "normal" running temperature, it starts reeving up and down. I changed already the impeller and cleaned the water cooler. Any idea what could be the cause of this up and down reeving (with and/or without charge)?

Thanks for any help/idea where to continue the search.

It could be a lot of things. I suspect the governor actuator which is an electric actuator that opens the throttle as the load increases. But it could be the PCB. I think you need an Onan tech.

Thank you Bill for your answer, but that will be rather impossible down here in Patagonia...

RPM increase and decrease suggests a fuel side issue and a change of that filter (and any filter, like a racor, that may feed that) may be a first step before the PCB.

Hi Eloi
Nothing is impossible in Tierra del Fuego!  In Ushuaia I replaced the Perkins of my Sharki with a Yanmar 54 hp and redid the whole engine room without any particular problems.
Onan has an importer, Naval Motor in Buenos Aires and various technicians throughout the country.
In Ushuaia there is Jorge Otamendi (Teté) who replaced my engine.  He is an excellent mechanic and he treated me well even financially.
As in all of Argentina, you don't have to be in a hurry, but the important thing is to understand what the problem is and then order a replacement.  If it is available from the importer, it will arrive in Ushuaia in a couple of days with rapid transport.
The address of Teté is as follows, but in the two yacht clubs everyone knows it.

Good luck!

The Governor, Actuator on the Onan MKAV is Part Number 306−5006−01 old#151-077. I carried one of these around the world as a spare because I decided it would be a critical failure part. I never needed it.
On the MKAV this part is driven by the PCB. Earlier Onan models adjusted the throttle differently.

I am not so sure I agree with the fuel issue that you describe with filters, and frankly I assumed that the owner checked for the simple things.

He said it operates normally until warmed up. A diesel at normal operating temperature uses slightly less fuel than a cold diesel.

I wonder if it is cold enough there to cause the fuel to gel inside the tank. Below about 5°C, diesel turns gelatinous.

Hi Eloi,

My first thought would be to check for fuel starvation… Make sure that fuel is flowing easily, the filters are clear, the lift pump is working.

Is there a relationship with loading it up and the reving up and down? So if it starts to become erratic and you immediately shut off the AC load, does it calm down?

Failing a fuel problem you might need an Onan technician…

How long are you planning to stay in Chile and Argentina?

All the best

Nick

Hi Nick,
I had a problem with the gen set cutting out after a few minutes running. It was a fuel issue caused by the gauze filter on the outlet from the tank being clogged. I cleared it with a blast of compressed air back through the fuel line. That was a couple of years ago and no problems since.
Kind Regards

Eloi,
I'm sure we all would like to hear if you fixed the problem and what it was.
Thanks,
