Greg,

 Martin,

I think you need to ask the yard doing the work. Anything on here is going to be a guess. The only way to be sure is to sand the paint from the area. Perhaps the yard did not sand old paint from this area or perhaps they gouged the gelcoat when sanding and it needs repair.

With best regards,

Mark

Martin,

I assume you are talking about what I circled in green. If you are, these are caused by older antifouling layers flaking or chipping off. Unfortunately, your very professional painter should have recommended sanding/scraping off the old antifouling. It is very likely that since some of the old antifouling layers have already fallen off, more will come off, and when they fall off, they will take the new primer & antifouling coating off in those places.

I assume that A54 172 is about 12 years old. If the previous owners did the right thing with antifouling renewal, 172 has about 6 layers of antifouling and it is time to remove it all and start over. That is my opinion and advice based on my experience and your photos. You will find other opinions about this.

Bill,

I understand. Makes absolutely sense to me. Happy that it is not gelcoat flaking of.

Thank you!

I agree with Bill, but of course the only way to be sure is it remove all antifouling next time around. But if I had to bet, I'd say it's just previous antifoul coming off and a poor prep job by your most recent painter.

Ours is flaking off in large chunks down to a layer applied prior to my ownership of the boat. I'm going to have it scraped and sanded.

As an aside, if any of you crossing the Pacific plan to get soda blasting done when you get to NZ, I will tell you that it's near impossible to get that done here. The local boatyard wanted around 15k NZD to hand scrape and sand.

Just a comment on Soda blasting

There is  in NZ a new product which was supplied to us by the copper coat agent in Christchurch. We put about 5 coats on 30 years of antifouling coats, spread an eco mat under the hull  and after a couple of hours waterblasted all anti fouling off. The paint gets caught in the mat but the water drains through. Thae mat then gets rolled up and old antifouling with it. Brilliant system, my recollection is that  it cost about NZ$1000 for the solvent and $300 for the mat. have to say I was a sceptic at the outset then astonished at the excellent result . No impact on the gel coat of Nga Waka’s 32 year old hull.

Do you remember the product name?

Otherwise, could I get the contact information for the agent you used in Christchurch? Thanks!

Hi Scott

itys a bit confusing. Richard lives in Christchurch but uses a warehouse in Auckland from which he distributes product

Sorry don't recall the name and presently too far from my boat shed to check. I vaguely recollect that it was

a uk devised system.

Richard was good to work with. if any issues i could call him

Best

Martin.
For what it’s worth, we had exactly the same looking patches, and it was indeed anti fouling that had flaked off and then been repainted over. Looked precisely the same as yours.
