Perkins injector leak

Malcolm Matalka

Hello, I finally did it, I bought the Sharki in Martinique. I head out there Feb 25th to take ownership.

With that, I'm trying to bring some parts from where I am in the Netherlands with me that I know I need. The survey found that the heat exchange core needs to be replaced, and that there is a leak with the injector. According to the owner, the part with the red arrow is what needs to be replaced. I don't know anything about Perkins 1.408 engines, is this just an injector? I'm trying to determine which part to buy.

Thank you,
/Malcolm

Malcom,

Congratulations, and welcome to the family!

The exact nut you point to is the high pressure fuel pipe into the injector.  If it is leaking there, and tightening doesn’t help, the issue could be with the injector, or the pipe end.  Normal torque on these is 18Nm, so don’t lean on it too hard!

If you already have a spare injector, they can be swapped out without too much trouble. If you are going to the trouble of pulling one injector, you might as well pull the others and have them all tested at a specialist shop. They get tired, and if they spray pattern is not good, performance suffers.

The fitting on the end of the pipe is flare fitting, and if it is damaged, the only real fix is to replace the pipe.  These are usually damaged when over tightened, which causes them to crack. They are available from a Perkins parts supplier.

Bill and Thomas, thank you both!

Naive question: I'm not in Martinique yet, is there a common way to ship items to a destination so they can be there when I arrive? I can probably purchase a post-office box for a few months?

Thank you

Hi Malcolm,

You might want to contact meestermotoren.nl in the Netherlands (Middelharnis). They run a Perkins repair and rebuild shop and could be of help to you. Maybe they have the parts on stock that you need. That way you can take them yourself on your flight to Martinique.

Kind regards, Bart.

Hi Malcolm,

I just spoke to Cor Meester, one of the owners of meestermotoren.nl. He has several parts in stock, including fuel lines. Give him a call, he sounds very helpful.

Kind regards, Bart.
