Prop protection against growth by covering with a plastic bag?
luvkante
Hi group,
I am facing heavy organic growth in my marina, which regularly „knocks out“ my AUTOPROP. Idea: putting a black plastic bag over it, when leaving the boat for a longer time? Yes, I have PROPSPEED on it, but the barnacles are a plague. I am not sure, whether my idea is good, because INOX needs water flow providing oxygen against its corrosion, but there isn`t much INOX around the prop except the SPURS linecutter and some bolts. @Bill and other material knowledgeable experts: GOOD OR BAD IDEA? Placing a plastic garage bag well tied over the folding propeller when staying put in a marina with murky water is a good idea; I did it for a few seasons in Greece and Turkey with excellent results; light brushing when removing the bag and off-you-go…until you have to take the boat out to do proper annual service on the drive shaft, C-drive oil change and propeller greasing. Hi Martin I have always covered the prop with a nylon bag when leaving the boat in Martinique during the summer months. The result is excellent, but you have to try to close it well to avoid the slightest circulation of water. You need to use a fairly thick bag that doesn't spoil too quickly. Ciao! I do not know the science behind it, but yes, I used a large black plastic bag and inserted some powdered dishwashing detergent. The bag was tied with a line between the AutoProp and the Line Cutter. The results were better than doing nothing, but certainly not perfect. Remember a single barnacle in the right place can have a big impact on an AutoProp.
