Rub Rail insert

I contacted Maud about buying a new rub rail insert ,she cannot provide an estimate for shipping. We are thinking it may be much more than we first estimated. Has anyone had the inserts shipped to the US., and tell us what the shipping cost were. The inserts are less than $900. I fear the shipping could be more than that.

Bill , I saw a picture of two inserts coiled on a pallet,they looked at least 24" or more. I would like to order them ,but not knowing the delivered cost ,I am reluctant. Based on 175 lbs. with the pallet ,we are coming up with $2000,00 shipping from the Fed Ex site.,which is far  more than twice the cost of the inserts ,about $850. I am hoping someone has shipped them here and knows what their total cost was.

Hi Pat:

I had the two pieces of rub-rail insert (I call them scupper) shipped from Amel for my hurricane repairs in Puerto Rico in Dec 2017.  Price was $2,686 with shipping.  They were about 5 feet too long for each side but better long than short. They came as Bill indicated, on a wooden pallet (sort of a miniature pallet) about 2 to 2.5 ft square wrapped in shrink wrap. They were heavy.    So indeed, the shipping is the greater part of the cost.  About $1,800.  It was covered in my insurance  settlement.  I had been considering replacing mine when Irma/Maria intervened and gave me a bonus in that small way, (didn't make up for the lost year of sailing while repairs were made. The new scupper looks so nice I would consider pressing ahead despite the cost.  When you install it you want to make sure that it is installed in compression because it does shrink a bit.  It is easier to install when in tension but to better fill and assure it doesn't leave a gap insist on putting it in compression.  I also left it a foot too long at the stern and at the 6 month mark I made a final trimming to avoid having a gap due to shrinkage.

Gary, I was afraid of that,I had read a previous post of yours ,but thought (hoped) that the $2,600.00 included installation and additional shipping to Puerto Rico. Its amazing to me that shipping would be that expensive. It might be cheaper to fly over with a couple of empty suitcases ,I'm not sure, I'm kidding,always wanted to see La Rochelle . The inserts cost about $850. ,so shipping and duty was approx. $1,700.00.,nuts ! Would you have a guesstimate of what each piece weight was ?

Danny, Diane is already checking flights and fares. $1800 buys a lot of airfare, even with the extra baggage fees. I wish I knew what they approx. weigh , thinking about 50 lbs. per side , too bad Maud cannot provide any shipping info.

Pat, I am sure you will enjoy La Rochelle regardless of how much transport you save. Count that a bonus. And then you get to see the Amel facility. The waterfront is a huge line of waterfront restaurants. The market in the old town is amazing. We stayed air bnb and walked down for our cafe sidewalk breakfasts. Life like it should be lived.

Danny, I was only sort of joking when I wrote back to Gary,a couple of hours ago, but since then we are really considering a vacation to France . We could save enough on shipping to pay for airfare ,about $850. r/t each in May .See Paris ,Normandy and La Rochelle and the Amel plant. Might need a third suitcase,I need a new bumper also ,plus missc. parts.Its a crazy idea ,but given the cost of shipping ,makes sense. Just need to determine weight and if one could fit into a large suitcase.

Hi Pat,

I took my davits as baggage on a flight from NZ to Ft Lauderdale so I wouldn't think the bumper would be a problem. It doesn't need to be in a suitcase, I just wrapped the dismantled davits.

Pat,  I'll rummage through my paperwork and see if I can find the way-bill for the scupper shipment and see if it has a weight (standby).  My guess is it would take two large suitcases for the scupper (one for each side) but the weight would be less without the pallet.

You don't have to put your baggage in suitcases. Just wrap it well and if necessary for handling create a handle. Saves weight too. How many surf boards have you seen as baggage. I've seen quite a few

Charles, Based on pics Bill sent they appear too big to fit in a large suitcase. I may contact the airline and see if we rolled them into the ticket counter if we could check them thru. Years ago, I know we could check in skies ,even a hang glider about 12' long. But times have changed. Now my wife is all excited about a vacation to France,this might backfire on me and cost me twice as much.
So let me know what you come up with,because I would hate to send $1,700 just for shipping,if that is what it would be. Unfortunately Maud cannot provide a quote on shipping. A ship would no doubt be cheaper than Fed Ex Express, and I am in no hurry,by June would be fine.

Danny, That is just what I suggested to Diane this morning when I realized they are too big to fit a suitcase. Just roll them in,with a rope handle. Can you still check something thru the size of a tire? Its been years since we used to transport large stuff,I thought there may be new restrictions ,since they have cracked down on baggage in recent yrs.

You should see the size of boxes that land in NZ as baggage from China, and go out as baggage for departing Chinese. That's not picking on the Chinese, its just a statement of fact.

Danny, I had not read your previous post about carrying davits and checking them in as baggage. This is good news ,its been many yrs. since I tried to check thru a large object. So I will just roll the two rub rails into the airport, and balance the bumper on my head. Bobs your uncle!

I am getting us a quote for a space in a container. I have done this in the past...

How many of us are jumping in? Please let me know. 

I am guessing we will need about 1 cubic meter and will be billed as high-density.

I was planning to ship to Annapolis, MD and then break bulk. From there we could reship domestically or you can pick-up.

Right now I have Charles (me) and Patrick.

Is anyone else jumping in?
