Sharki Electrical
Malcolm Matalka
I'm now working on updating the electrical on Blooper. Currently I'm looking at putting around 600 amp hours of lithium in. I think i can fit two 330 amp hour victron batteries in the aft cabin. Anyone have suggestions for obvious things i should look out for? Thank you! /Malcolm |

Hello Malcom, You may want to look at a youtube video of SV Panda (now Outer Passage) "Offgrid energy storage and solar on a sailboat." Darren explains very well how they fitted out their Sharki. Grtz, Bas Branderhorst Op wo 8 mrt. 2023 02:10 schreef Malcolm Matalka <mmatalka@...>:

Hi Malcolm, My 2 cents: The obvious: check whether 2 batteries will fit under the bunk. I'm currently building a battery box in the aft cabin port bunk on our Sharki. I thought I could squeeze in 5 lead acid 100Ah batteries, but that didn't fit. So I settle for 4 batteries instead. Don't forget to tie them down, you don't want to have these things flying around. Another obvious point: victron states you need an external bms. I assume you are aware of this. Lithium ion batteries are no dropfit replacements for lead acid, gel or agm batteries. They pack a lot of energy but it comes at a cost: a much more complex and expensive charging system to store energy. Fair winds, Bart. Malcom,
We own a Maramu and installed 4 of the 100AH Victron Super Pack batteries and we really like them, no issues at all. We also have a Sonnenschien 8D 200AH gel battery as a back up to the Lithiums just in case something like a lightning strike were to take out the BMI's. I personally like the Super Pack concept with each battery having it's own BMI since if one battery failed we just can remove it from the system and everything still works. We are thinking of also going up to 600AH of lithium but the 400AH has really been enough. We followed the story of Panda and especially owning a Sharki you might find it inspirational as well as educational. We think that the Sharki's are great boats, best of luck with your project.

Thank you, everyone, for the responses. One idea I'm looking at is putting the inverter in the engine room. The engine room is pretty big on the Sharki. It's a big honkin' inverter. If i put everything (except batteries) in there, then I could have pretty reasonable access to everything without having to rip apart the bedroom. Any thoughts on pro's vs con of using the engine room like that? Thank you! "Bas Branderhorst & Gemma Gonzalez" <bas.branderhorst@...> writes: Hello Malcom, |

I've been thinking about how to execute this. I'm thinking if getting a piece of plywood abd putting it in the circled area (port side if engine room " and there hanging inverter, bus bars, etc. Any thoughts on that? Am i doing something obviously wrong? Thank you! Ohhh great. |

Forgot to attach the image, of course.

Our system is emerging and evolving, it looked like this with one of the two Lithium batteries back at the manufacturer. Our a2b charger and b2b charger and solar controller are all on that board. With fuses, its a tight fit. Mark Porter Sea Hobo Sharki #96 UK |

Hi Mark, Do you have any drawings/schematics you would like to share? I'm in the process of designing a new system for our Sharki #16 Frangipane. Any inspiration is appreciated.

Wow mark that looks great! I'd love more details if you have them. Why did you choose to go far aft rather than further up where there is that big open spot? How are you connecting the board to the wall? Is that just a rectangle of plywood? El vie, 10 mar 2023 7:31, Bart de Bakker <brgdebakker@...> escribió:

I've been looking at my boat and consulting friends for help and thinking of doing what the following pictures show. The major unknown is the fuel tank is on the other side of the inverter wall and the inverter is big. Clearly hitting that would be bad. I think the is enough plywood between these two to be able to screw a piece of plywood for the inverter to hang. Boy, that inverter is heavy!

I can send more photos and describe the system. We adapted the old system when we replaced the old AGMs and added the A2B charger that would cope with the lithiums and a B2B charger to charge the lead acid starter battery. We also have 40w of solar going in. Has not been perfectly straightforward as the engine battery needed early replacement and the stbd alternator packed up after 39 years. We like standing space in the engine compartment, that is why everything is packed into one corner. Back on board next week. Latest update: I've been ripping out all the foam in the engine room, i want to replace it, it was just gross. I'm making decent progress. I then need to sand it down to make a surface i can glue the new foam. I'm hoping that is done by Tuesday. Is there any good access to the front of the engine room? I know there is a door next to the diesel tank but you can't really get access to much in the front. Or doesn't feel like the stairs are designed to come off. Maybe there is access under the sink?

Malcom, On my Sharki I installed my Victron inverter & charge in the portside lazerette. It's cooler there and is out of the way. A bit of a tight fit, but it works. I'm still using AGM's so heat's a problem since I re-powered with a Beta 50 last year. Starboard side engine room I do have a wall of connections for the electrical stuff. I'll take pictures and post them once I splash tomorrow. I'll also post my electronic [B&G] stuff up.
I've been super busy trying to fix FIASCI from the Hurricane damage last Fall. Incidentally, I own the extrusion mold for Maramu, Sharki, rub rails. I have do have about 80 feet ( 14.5' x 6 pieces / 10' x 2 pieces) in black if someone wants buy them from me. Or you can order extruded pieces new for your boat. -- Aras Grinius SV FIASCO Sharki #163 1988 |
