SM2K dishwasher space
Thomas Kleman
On SM2K 422, we've adhered to the "keep it original" mantra pretty faithfully. No panels of aircraft breakers, holes in wood, etc.
10.5 years ago Joel Potter activated the dishwasher to show me it works. That's the last time it was used. Having lived aboard for 9 years now we are pretty sure our habits won't change. We consider it unnecessary and wasteful for 2 people to have one on this boat. We keep wine in it now. Wondering if anyone out there has re-purposed this space in some clever way. Wine fridge ? Storage ? Something else ? Tom and Kirstin SV L'ORIENT Oahu, Hawaii

Hi Tom and Kirtin, we have a top opening fridge in the dishwasher space installed by the PO and not the most elaborate but we are very happy with it and it gets a lot of use. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Cindy actually likes using our dishwasher. Who am I to diminish her happiness?

We always thought it would use less water than hand washing.

Repurposed into a storage space by the previous owner. It may become a space for icemaker. Randall A54#56

The most useful domestic appliance on board. It uses less water and frees your sink space. You power it on when you charge your batteries with the generator and produce water by the watermaker. Thank you captain for installing it on board

Hi All, Just bought Spruzzo SM#379. Dishwasher was removed and the Admiral insists I install one. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jeff Marina di Ragusa, Sicily

Hi Jeff and congratulations on your acquisition. Unfortunately, the early boats that had the front opening dishwasher, it is no longer available and is not supported for spare parts. Same thing with the later top opening version. The “brain’ on the top opening version seems to be particularly vulnerable. Any electrical/computer engineers out there who could reverse engineer one? I am told it is a very simple device.
Tom and Kirstin on L’Orient, I could tell by the petulant look on Tom’s face when I showed him how to operate the dishwasher that likely this would be the only time it would be used. If you do convert this space to storage, refridgeration, icemaker or ???, could you operate it one more time to prove that the brain is functioning and then save the brain for me so I can get it reverse engineered?
If you repurpose this area thoughtfully and to Amel quality standards, it will not adversely affect your resale value. I used and appreciated the dishwasher on both of the Super Maramus I was fortunate to own and enjoy. Got the water up to 180F and used less of it than hand washing while being whisper quiet while doing so. That said, about 1/3 of the boats I resell, the owners indicate that the dishwasher was not used much if ever.
All the best, Joel

We kept the dishwasher intact but removed and saved all internal parts and installed a bred maker which we have greatly enjoyed, particularly when crossing the Atlantic

That sounds good Dimitris, Had it still been in place when we bought Ocean Pearl we may have discovered its value. However I dont think I will change back. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

When we bought Elyse in 2013, I didn't think I'd ever use it, but I do !
With just two on the boat it doesn't seem justified, but with 4 I have used it a lot. With just two on the boat, we wash dishes by hand and put them in the dishwasher to drip dry. This works really well at sea. After a couple of weeks we run it to drain the water out of it. Brilliant ! Alan Elyse SM437

Thanks for all these great ideas. We settled on the Blue Sea Systems Marine meth lab, in african mahogany. A drop in solution, and with the blue tooth feature I can cook from a safe distance via my phone.
In all seriousness, we are full time live-aboards passing time in Hawaii until we can return to FP. Since we have US mail service and access to Amazon and Defender (plus nowhere to sail to), many projects that were far down the list are being examined......and lots of kilo-dollars disappearing. I'm leaning towards some kind of tasteful wine storage, but not ready to pull the trigger quite yet. Tom and Kirstin SV L'ORIENT Oahu, Hawaii

Tom, I changed mine to a top loading refrigerator, It is great as when you open the lid the cold air does not fall out like the front loading refrig. The drinks stay very cold if you wish. Eric Sm 376 Kimberlite
