Starlink in French Ploynesia !

Juan de Zulueta

I just started to test again my Starlink RV bought in France a few months ago in French Polynesia South Pacific.
I am currently sailing in the Tuamotus ( Rangiroa, Fakarava, Toau…) and it works even when sailing !

The service is announced by Starlink in 2024 but it seems it is already running.
since I am currently far away from any shipyard I just put it in a  fish rod holder momentarily.

the service is not 100% perfect but we can call on WhatsApp, download movies, watch replay tv everywhere, download high definition weather forecast .
this is indeed a true game changer in those remote location where the coverage of 4g is extremely limited.

It shouldn't be a surprise that it works since Starlink has a marine version, that touts worldwide coverage (very expensive). The reason it is not for sale or listed as available yet in FP is because of licensing agreements. It is not due to satellite placement.

Also be aware if you do not have the marine contract, you are probably in violation of your T&C agreement. Once too many people start to do what you are doing, SL will start to shut down services for the violators. Look at what happened with the Google phone and world-wide coverage. I think right now they are having issue with the growth of the company and are focused elsewhere. They seem to be staffed with ex-Twitter employees who want to wreck things :)

Hi Juan and Mark,
I have just had my Starlink RV version delivered to me in the UK. Currently enjoying some cold weather here  after 3 years in the Caribbean.
I am planning to take the gear back to our boat in the Caribbean soon.
Spoke to and saw many cruisers who have been using this from Grenada to USVI during 2022. All reports are very good. No one has been locked out and with so many satellites going over the pick up signal/connection is excellent.
My question Juan is should I activate this in the UK before I get to the Caribbean or just set it up there? I have not activated my subscription yet.
I am looking forward to using this after having 5 sim cards on the go at one time over the past few years.
The Starlink for boats forum is very good information.

Great question! I'm considering buying SL here in Australia and taking to the Med and Caribbean later this year. The Med has not been much of a problem with SIM juggling but I believe the Caribbean is more problematic.

Starlink terms of service dictate that you cannot use the service outside of the continent where it was purchased. If you buy a starlink in Australia and take it overseas, you are in breach of those terms. Will it work? Yes, until they realise that you’re outside Aus and turn it off. My understanding is that at that point it becomes a brick, even once returned to Australia it wont work, but I could be misinformed on that point. If you intend to use it in Europe, buy it in Europe and choose the RV service or turn on portability, it will then work throughout Europe BUT only for two months at a time outside the country of its registered address.
Starlink is absolutely magnificent technology but it is not yet truly global, and is probably not yet ideal for cruisers unless they are cruisers that don’t venture far. I have no doubt that it will be at some point but that’s a way off.

Regards,

Craig

Hi Bary,

I have activated my Starlink in France at my address before bringing it to FP.
Regarding the marine version, it is adapted to large vessels. I am sure they will address the market of Sailing vessels soon. Even if available for a few months it is so good compare to iridium that it worth taking the risk.

Best regards

Hi All,

The Facebook group “Starlink on boats” is extremely interesting.
They do recommend to désactivate the motor. I did not do it since it means making a big hole in the antenna to unplug the motor wire…
I prefer to accept a few outage in the transmission.

Fantastic news, unfortunately half a year too late for us as we're now in NZ. :)

Starlink Maritime is now advertised as "full global coverage" so I guess the newer version 1.5 satellites with inter-satellite laser links are plentiful enough to eliminate the need for a nearby ground station in FP. They are not restricting the cheaper RV version, yet.

I would suggest keeping a backup satellite system, however. I am guessing you probably do. We currently have the Iridium GO, but also carry a Garmin Inreach Mini in a case, which we carried when scuba diving those Tuamotu atoll passes on an outgoing current. I love my outboard, but do not trust it that much!

Having a few friends who work/worked for SpaceX, they have a reputation for moving fast, breaking stuff and dealing with the details later. They may start enforcing those "no in motion use" and "no mid ocean use" terms at any time. I surmise they'll just charge us RV users a fee for offshore use.

I got mine half off, so if they cancel it after a few months usage, my wallet will probably survive. :)

PS- Try to get to Tahanea if you have the chance. That Northern pass is mind blowing.

Hello Alex

Indeed I used a fish rod holder. Bear in mind I am sailing in the Tuamotus with no access to any facility …
This is a temporary install buy which is working fine.
Cabling can be a problem since the plug shape force you to drill 3cm holes. I used a hole done in my Simpson davits to go inside the boat.

It works fine, we can download weather forecast high def, movies, watch internet tv streaming, call in WhatsApp  but service in French Polynesia is still unstable in term of throughput.

Tilo,

Did you get the original Starlink Pole Pipe adapter or ordered the whole unit as a pole mount?

I am trying to figure out how to covert from the RV quadpod mount to the pole mount using the Pole pipe adapter sold by Starlink.

Further problem is that I can not get the Pole pipe adapter in NEW ZEALAND and will have to order via my Australian Starlink account – thus it will be sent to Australia

I also used a rod holder but I ordered the Starlink pole mount. That keeps it secure. I did have to move the GPS antenna that was below it, but it works just fine under the deck behind the nav station.

I had the RV kit and I ordered the pole mount adaptor separately because I wasn’t too confident with how secure it would be just resting in the rod holder. It’s solid as a rock now!

Teun,

In the Starlink on line shop you can find the pole adapter.
You may need to find somebody to order it for you in NZ?

Hi Juan,

Thanks for the help – in fact another A54 owner, currently nearby OPUA, did exactly what you suggested; he offered to order for me.

I am looking forward trying this set up.
