Super Maramu 2000 vs 54

We are beginning our search for a boat to circumnavigate in a couple of years.  We have narrowed it to an Amel SM 2000 or 54.  My wife likes the interior of the 54 better, but the extra beds seem to be a waste for us as a couple.

Any thoughts on one over the other?

You will pay a lot more for the 54.  As far as sailability not sure the value is there.  However, Livability the aft cabin in the 54 is a lot more comfortable, either person can get out of bed for the bathroom or other reason without waking the other up.  Separate shower is very nice.  I love my 54 but both boats are perfect for a circumnavigation.  As Joel Potter told me 'if you let your wife on a 54 you are NOT going to buy a Super Maramu

The 54 has more space for sure and the extra bunk beds and the skipper bunk are great when you need them. The two cabins are very comfortable and I feel less crowded on the 54 it has more headspace. I believe both hold there value.

If you are definitely getting an Amel, as it was said. “if you get on the 54 you likely will not look back.”

Rayman, what a fantastic place to be in your life, good luck with your adventure. Either boat would be fabulous to use for circumnavigation. As stated  above there is more living space on the 54 but there is less stowage space. The 54 carries more positive buoyancy aft and has a much better set up for davits, solar panels, etc. SM comes with a  Yanmar, the 54 only a Volvo. The 54 bow thruster requires less maintenance. A SM often comes with a double and single berth in the aft stateroom, both have fitted leeboards, the 54 normally has a centreline double. The optional extra double anchor arrangement on the 54 would be great to have as would twin headsails. It has to come down to personal choice, you certainly are going for the right manufacturer. One word of caution, these boats are heavily system driven, sure they have great redundancy and manual back up, but they take a serious amount of preventive maintenance and like anything mechanical electrical, they will break, especially in the tropics. Therefore, for a circumnavigation a very substantial part of your budget has to be focused on spares.
