Ultra anchor on Santorin #newboat
Happy Holidays group! We're upgrading our Santorin and currently looking for a new anchor. After considering a Rocna (and making a cardboard prototype) we listened to the resetting problems, so now we're thinking about a ultra marine anchor. Anyone here who has experience with this anchor and/or has information on the right sizing for a Santorin? Thanks in advance,

We’ve carried a 25kg Rocna for 8 years. Fits fine on our Santorin and only dragged once. That was totally my fault rushing to get off the boat to meet someone!

Martijn,
There are many excellent anchors on the market these days, and I would include both Rocna and Ultra among these. The downside of the Ultra is that it is only available in Stainless steel. The cost of a stainless anchor has always thrown them off consideration for any boat of mine. A stainless anchor certainly looks nice, but the material has no other advantages over quality galvanized steel. If the appearance of a shiner piece of boat jewelry on the bow of your boat is important, then by all means go ahead. But I find that people frequently buy smaller stainless anchors because of the cost, and that would be a bad decision. This is really the only technical fault I find with Ultra anchors. To avoid price shock, the sizing recommendations they make for anchors is just too small for a cruising boat that needs to be self-sufficient in any conditions that come to them. Hi Martijn, I have recently used an Ultra on a Beneteau 46 in the USVI and Rhode Island and can report that it worked as expected. Easy to deploy and recover and quick to set. I did not have any reset situations, but I think it would reset like most modern generation anchors. I can’t speak to fit. There’s a great YouTube channel on anchors- SV Panope. https://youtube.com/@flygoodwin Good Luck, |

Hi Martijn,
we have a Rocna 33 on our Santorin, never slipped. With a very simple modification (2 steel plates and a roll, see attached picture) it fits perfect. I just mounted the plates at the existing screws. fair winds, herbert KALI MERA, SN120, Mexiko |

We have used both a Rocna and our current Ultra. Both are fine anchors, and I would say, roughly equivalent. If you choose the pricier Ultra, I recommend a sacrificial anode attached to the chain, very close to the anchor (if galvanized), as the Zinc coating on the chain will behave as a sacrificial anode and strip itself from the chain. An appropriate shaft Zinc works fine.

Good info here. Thanks all! @Matt: Do you know what size Ultra is best for the Santorin? @Herbert With our cardboard prototype we concluded the 33 Rocna is not a perfect fit. I thought about removing some fibreglass but this is a nicer solution to use that extra weight of the 33. Thanks. Martijn SN 090 |

I’m sorry, I don’t have size and weight data of your Santorin. i would go one size up from the anchor manufacturer’s recommendation. there Ultra is a great anchorage, but my research tells me the Spade is also very good. |

Thanks. I didn't mean the weight. I would like to know which Ultra fits in the front of the boat. I'm currently not at the boat and can't make another cardboard prototype.
