Water maker high pressure elbows

Matt Salatino

Several owners, yours truly included, are having leaks in the elbows going into and out of the membrane pack. One owner found the fix. A different elbow. The problem is, it’s €127 for one, simple elbow from Dessalator!! Does anyone have a decent source for stainless high pressure fittings?  Also does anyone know the thread sizes so I can source my own? The new one is the simple, bent tube.

I changed all Dessalator hoses and fittings to food grade hoses 5000 psi rated and fittings at a Specialized hydraulic biz in NZ.

No issue of any sort since. I also changed from the 3 membranes to a single bigger unit and associated housing with SS END CAPS.  No more convoluted design while being reliable.

Matt,

You can share any/all of the following from my Amel Book.

The fittings are standard 3/8" JIC fittings that are available in Stainless Steel and other metals.

These fittings have to be tight and Dessalator recommends using Loctite 542 on the flare part of the fitting.

There is a new product that is too new to know how well it works, but I suspect is what you are looking for:

I assume that the reason Dessalator switched from a 90 degree JIC fitting to the one below is because it is cheaper and has 1 less JIC flare fitting than the original method (2nd photo below).

I recommend using the 90-degree fitting for several reasons:
  1. The dessalator "reusable" HP hose connections are problematic for many owners and the bronze will corrode. It is much better to replace the HP hoses with Stainless Steel JIC 3/8ths fittings that are crimped on the HP hose by a HP Hose shop and eliminate the use of the Dessalator reusable fittings
  2. Changing an aged HP hose is much easier

This fitting can be dangerous if not done 100% accurately. 50-60 BAR is a lot of pressure and a loose hose can ruin everything electrical in your engine room.

If you want to continue to use the Dessalator fittings, their instructions are confusing. Use these instructions:

You do not need "food grade." These hoses and JIC fittings carry Raw Water, not Product Water.

I can reccommend the Flare Tite seals......I used them 8 months ago when reassembling after a membrane chnage and the fittings have been 100% dry since...no leaks, not a drop.

Thanks Bill. I’ll pass it on.
