Zinc Anodes

Rick Stanley

Hey Folks,

Wondering if anyone has a good source for metric anodes on the US easr coast. The ones I'm replacing have a 10mm threaded brass sheath in the middle to take the bolt. Any ideas? I've called abound a bit, no luck so far.

Thanks,

Hi Rick,

I’m assuming you are talking about the anodes on the rudder. We have used similar sized US anodes, widely available, and just drill the center a little bit so that the bolt will go through. I don’t think having the threads is critical.

Where in Rock Hall are you? We base at North Point.

Hi Rick. Most of my clients buy the inch sized zincs without the copper insert ( easy to find ) and ream or drill the hole slightly larger to accept the somewhat larger metric fastener. I did this on all three Amel boats I owned with excellent results. Metric zincs are hard to find in CONUS and the ones I did find in Annapolis were three times as expensive.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

Joel

Rick, I just drill out the hole a little to fit the bolt. Do you have a VolvoTMD 22A by any chance. I live 30 miles north of Rock Hall on the Sassafras River and need to look at another engine , to see how the fuel shut off is wired. The previous owner wired it incorrectly I just discovered, and need to see how it should be wired.

The Amel factory zinc is about a R5 size. I use a R7 and just drill it out a bit.

Hey Tom I'm up on the hard behind the Yacht Services shed at Haven Harbor South. Currently in the process of dismantling/removing the ancient Dessalator Duo D 60 thats been slowly rotting in place in my engine room. Fun times!! Swing by any time. If my truck is parked next to my boat, I'm onboard.

Thanks Joel I was thinking that was going to be the way to go, figued I'd bounce the question off the group as it never hurts to ask, right..

Just FYI, I called Technoseal USA and they stock up BoatZinc.com with 125mm diameter and 11mm hole zinc anodes.
Although they call them Azimut, because Azimut boats need it in USA, but the rep told me it is Technoseal product.

I don't know why it is called R4, but here are the parameters of it.
I thought parameters wise is what AMELs need. No?
Diameter:  125mm (4.9")
Thickness:  21mm (0.8")
Hole Diameter:  11mm (0.4")
Countersink Diameter:  30mm (1.1")

Ruslan,

I use regular R7 zincs—bigger is better.

You just drill out the hole a bit and use a grinder on the top to make a flat spot . Easier to get and much more zinc.

I also hang this zinc over the side whenever I am in a marina. The boat next to you might be “hot” this zinc shows a lot of wear and is much better than the normal guppy that is available in most chandleries

https://www.boatzincs.com/hanging_anode_zinc.html

I also use this device when I am in a marina to see what the electric is in the water.

Hi Eric,

Brilliant idea! Where do you connect the hanging anode to?

Martin,

On your 54 the standing rigging is connected to boding. Anything connected to the standing rigging will work. Maybe the Mizzen Chainplate.

On Kimberlite Super Maramu, I connect it to the bonding at the fuel fill in the locker starboard side of the mizzen mast. It works when the wire is behind the lip of the locker.
